Note on the transliteration:
The transliteration system of the BP/TLB is based on the Unicode/UTF-8 system. However, there may be difficulties with some of the letters – particularly on PC/Windows-based systems, but not so much on the Mac. We have chosen the most accepted older and traditional systems of transliteration against, e.g, Wylie for Tibetan, since with Unicode it is possible, in Sanskrit and Tibetan, etc., to represent one sound with one letter in almost all the cases (excepting Sanskrit and Tibetan aspirated letters, and Tibetan tsa, tsha, dza). We thus do not use the Wylie system which widely employs two letters for one sound (ng, ny, sh, zh etc.).
 
Important:
We ask you in particular to note the use of the ’ apostrophe and not the ' representing the avagrāha in Sanskrit, and most important the ’a-chuṅ in Tibetan. On the Mac the ’ is Alt-M.

References:
The references for Sanskrit are to verse-number in Bernhard (1965) (some page references at the beginning and end are also given); for Chinese to page, paragraph and line in T.213 (translation by Tiān Xīzāi 天息災; Chinese verse numbering is also given); for Tibetan to page, side and line in Kg mdo sde sa (translation by Vidyākaraprabhā and Rin chen mchog); and for English to page and line in Woodville Rockhill (1975). The English is a translation of a the Tibetan translation, and therefore follows this with regard to verse-numbering, lacunae and additions. The corresponding verse number in the Dharmapada is in the English given in parenthesis.
 
The in some cases major difference in the order of the verses of the different languages has caused difficulties with regard to the parallell arrangement. The order of each translation has been kept, and corresponding verses are therefore in some cases found either further up or further down in the text. In these cases verse correspondence may be found in the critical notes.
