disc▪ With all likelihood, and as already suggested by ClassAr lexicographers, [v1] ‘to throw, hurl’ seems to be a development from ClassAr zaǧǧa (u , zaǧǧ) in the—now obsolete—sense of †‘to hit s.o. with the butt-end of a spear, shoot arrows at; to strike with (the iron-foot of a spear)’, which is a denom. vb. I from ↗zuǧǧ ‘arrow-head’, in itself probably a borrowing from Pers zuǧ ‘id.’. – In contrast, [v2] ‘to push, urge, drive; to press, squeeze, force’ can be thought of as being a denom. from the same ↗zuǧǧ in the (now obsolete) meaning of ‘(tip of the) elbow’ [↗ZǦː (ZǦǦ)_6].
