ʔammā ’llaḏīna ʔabaw taġyīr riwāyāti-him bi-riwāyāt miṣriyyaẗ wa-ʔaṣarrū bi-ʕinād sāḏiǧ ġabiyy ʕalà tamṯīl riwāyāti-him al-mutarǧamaẗ al-baʕīdaẗ ʕan ḏawqi-nā al-muḍāddaẗ li-mazāǧi-nā
[But not all of them did so.] Those, however, who refused to replace the [foreign] pieces with Egyptian ones and insisted, in stupid and naive stubbornness, [to continue] to stage foreign pieces, far removed from our taste, opposed to our mentality,1
AR: taġyīr, riwāyaẗ, miṣrī (Miṣr / Miṣriyyaẗ), ʔiṣrār, ʕinād, sāḏiǧ (saḏāǧaẗ), ġabiyy (ġabāʔ), tamṯīl, tarǧamaẗ, ḏawq, mazāǧ
EN: our taste, our mentality
uḍṭurrū – raġman ʕan-hum – ʔimmā ʔan yuhāǧirū min Miṣr ʔaw yahǧurū ’l-marsaḥ
were either forced to emigrate from Egypt, against their will, or to leave the stage,
AR: hāǧara (hiǧraẗ), Miṣr, marsaḥ

ka-mā waqaʕa li-quṭbayni min ʔaqṭāb al-marsaḥ wa-nawābiġ al-fann,
as happened with two big pillars of the theatre scene and geniuses of art.
AR: marsaḥ, fann

wa-humā ʔiḏā ḥaddaṯat-humā nafsu-humā fī ’l-mustaqbal ʔilà ’l-ruǧūʕ ʔilà ’l-tamṯīl fī Miṣr fa-lā yumkinu-humā ʔillā ʕalà qāʕidaẗ tamṯīl al-riwāyāt al-ʕaṣriyyaẗ al-miṣriyyaẗ.
If these two should decide, some day in the future, to return to theatre-making in Egypt, they will be able to do so only on the condition that they stage contemporary Egyptian plots.
AR: nafs, mustaqbal, tamṯīl, Miṣr, qāʕidaẗ (qawāʕid), riwāyaẗ, ʕaṣrī (ʕaṣriyyaẗ), miṣrī (Miṣr / Miṣriyyaẗ)

fa-l-yafhamā hāḏihī ’l-ḥaqīqaẗ allatī taʕibnā li-ʔifhāmi-himā ʔiyyā-hā?
So, will they possibly acknowledge this truth that we have worked so hard to make them understand?
AR: ḥaqīqaẗ

wa-yuḥzinu-nā ʔan naqūla ʔinna ’l-ʔadab al-ʕaṣrī al-miṣrī fī waqti-nā ’l-ḥāḍir ġayr mustaqill wa-lā mawsūm bi-ṭābiʕ šaḫṣiyyati-nā,
It makes us sad to say that contemporary Egyptian literature is neither independent nor bears the traits of our [national] character these days.
AR: ʔadab, ʕaṣrī (ʕaṣriyyaẗ, muʕāṣaraẗ), miṣrī (Miṣr / Miṣriyyaẗ), mustaqill (istiqlāl), ṭābiʕ, šaḫṣiyyaẗ
EN: national, character
