(Havesalen i konsul Bernicks hus.)
(Konsul Bernick, med et spanskrør i hånden, kommer i hæftig vrede ud fra det bagerste værelse til venstre og lader døren stå halvt åben efter sig.)

DRITTER AKT

Das Gartenzimmer im Bernickschen Hause.
Bernick, ein spanisches Rohr in der Hand, kommt in heftigem Zorn aus dem hintersten Zimmer links und läßt die Tür halb offen.

ACT III

(SCENE--The same room. BERNICK, with a cane in his hand and evidently in a great rage, comes out of the farther room on the left, leaving the door half-open behind him.)

第三幕(还是博尼克家对着花园的那间屋子。博尼克拿着根棍子怒气冲冲地从左边第二间屋子里进来，让门半敞着。)

KONSUL BERNICK.
Se så; nu er der da endelig engang bleven alvor af det; den lusing tænker jeg han skal huske. (til nogen inde i værelset.) Hvad siger du? – Og jeg siger, du er en uforstandig moder! Du undskylder ham, gir ham medhold i alle hans slyngelstreger. – Ikke slyngelstreger? Hvad kalder du det da? At liste sig ud af huset ved nattetid, gå tilhavs med fiskerbåden, blive borte til langt ud på dagen og sætte mig i slig dødelig angst, mig, som har så meget andet at stå i. Og så vover den knægt at true med, at han vil løbe sin vej! Ja, lad ham prøve på det! – Du? Nej, det tror jeg nok; du bekymrer dig ikke stort om hans ve og vel. Jeg tror gerne, at om han satte livet til –! – Så? Ja, men jeg har en gerning at efterlade mig her i verden; jeg er ikke tjent med at blive barnløs. – Ingen indvendinger, Betty; det blir, som jeg har sagt; han har husarrest – (lytter.) Hys; lad ingen mærke noget.
(Fuldmægtig Krap kommer fra højre.)

BERNICK.
So, nun hätte ich endlich einmal Ernst gemacht! Die Schläge, denke ich, wird er sich merken! In das Zimmer hineinrufend. Was sagst Du? – Und ich sage, Du bist eine unvernünftige Mutter. Du entschuldigst ihn, Du beschönigst alle seine Bubenstreiche. – Keine Bubenstücke? Wie nennst Du’s denn sonst? Sich nachts aus dem Hause schleichen, mit einem Fischerboot in die See hinausfahren, bis zum hellichten Tag wegbleiben und mich in tödliche Angst versetzen, – mich, der den Kopf so voll hat! Und da wagt der Bengel noch, zu drohen, er würde davonlaufen! Ja, er soll es nur probieren! – Du? Ja, das glaube ich gern. Du bekümmerst Dich viel um sein Wohl und Weh! Ich glaube, wenn’s ihm selbst ans Leben ginge –! So ? – Aber ich habe eine Aufgabe hier auf der Welt zu hinterlassen; mir ist es nicht gleichgültig, ob ich kinderlos bin oder nicht. – Keine Widerrede, Betty! Es bleibt bei dem, was ich gesagt habe, – er hat Hausarrest. Er horcht. Pst! Laß niemand was merken!
Krap kommt von rechts.

BERNICK
(speaking to his wife, who is in the other room).
There! I have given it him in earnest now; I don’t think he will forget that thrashing! What do you say?--And I say that you are an injudicious mother! You make excuses for him, and countenance any sort of rascality on his part--Not rascality? What do you call it, then? Slipping out of the house at night, going out in a fishing boat, staying away till well on in the day, and giving me such a horrible fright when I have so much to worry me! And then the young scamp has the audacity to threaten that he will run away! Just let him try it!--You? No, very likely; you don’t trouble yourself much about what happens to him. I really believe that if he were to get killed--! Oh, really? Well, I have work to leave behind me in the world; I have no fancy for being left childless--Now, do not raise objections, Betty; it shall be as I say--he is confined to the house. (Listens.) Hush; do not let any one notice anything.
(KRAP comes in from the right.)

(向隔壁屋里的人)
哼!这回我可不客气了!这顿棍子他大概忘不了啦!你说什么?我说你是个糊涂妈妈!你护着儿子，纵容他胡闹。你说不是胡闹?那么是什么?夜里溜出去，坐了小渔船下海，第二天老晚才回家，把我吓得半死，好像我自己的事还不够麻烦似的。这小流氓还敢吓唬我，说他要逃走!好，让他试试!你?恐怕做不到。他出乱子你不在乎。要是有一天他把命送掉--!哦，真的?可是我的事业将来得有人接着干下去，我不愿意绝子绝孙。贝蒂，别跟我斗嘴，我的话一定得照办，从今以后不许他出门。(听)嘘，别让人家看出什么来。(克拉普从右边进来。)

Vollständig repariert; das heißt: dem Anschein nach; verschalt; sah aus wie ganz neu. Hörte, daß Aune selbst die ganze Nacht bei Licht unten gearbeitet hatte.

KRAP.
Was completely repaired--to all appearance at any rate, covered up--looked as good as new. I heard that Aune himself had been working at it by lantern light the whole night.

从外面看起来，窟窿完全补好了，勾抹得很整齐，看着像新的一样。我听说渥尼打着灯笼亲自动手干了一整夜。

KONSUL BERNICK.

BERNICK.

Gik og funderte på dette; folkene hvilte just til frokost, og så fandt jeg anledning til ubemærket at se mig om både udenbords og indenbords; havde svært for at komme ned i den lastede skude; men fik troen i hænderne. Der sker underfundigheder, herr konsul.

KRAP.
Ging mir nicht aus dem Kopf; die Leute waren eben beim Frühstück, und so hatte ich Gelegenheit, unbemerkt mich umzusehen an der Außenseite wie im Innern des Schiffes. Hatte meine liebe Not, in der schwer beladenen Schute nach unten zu kommen; erhielt aber Gewißheit. Schuftigkeiten im Werke, Herr Konsul.

KRAP.
I turned it over in my head for a bit; the hands were away at their breakfast, so I found an opportunity to have a look around the boat, both outside and in, without anyone seeing me. I had a job to get down to the bottom through the cargo, but I learned the truth. There is something very suspicious going on, Mr. Bernick.

我心里很纳闷儿。那时候正好工人都在吃早饭，我趁着没人，把那只船里里外外仔细瞧了一瞧。从货堆里钻到船舱里不是桩容易事，可是我看了几处，心里就明白了。博尼克先生，厂里有人在捣乱。

KONSUL BERNICK.
Jeg kan ikke tro Dem, herr Krap. Jeg kan ikke, jeg vil ikke tro sligt om Aune.

BERNICK.
Ich kann es mir nicht denken, Herr Krap. Ich kann, ich will so was nicht von Aune glauben.

BERNICK.
I cannot believe it, Krap. I cannot and will not believe such a thing of Aune.

博尼克
不会，克拉普先生，我不信渥尼会捣乱。

FULDMÆGTIG KRAP.
Gør mig ondt, – men er den skære sandhed. Sker underfundigheder, siger jeg. Intet nyt tømmer indsat, så vidt jeg kunde skønne; bare dyttet og drevet og overklinket med plader og pressenninger og sådant noget. Rent fusk! „Indian Girl“ når aldrig New-York; går tilbunds som en sprukken gryde.

KRAP.
Tut mir leid, – ist aber die reine Wahrheit. Schuftigkeiten, sage ich! Kein neues Bauholz eingesetzt, soweit ich es beurteilen konnte. Nur verspundet und vernietet und verkleistert mit Latten und Teertuch und was weiß ich! Die reinste Pfuscherei! »Indian Girl« erreicht New-York im Leben nicht; sinkt wie ein lecker Bottich.

KRAP.
I am very sorry--but it is the simple truth. Something very suspicious is going on. No new timbers put in, as far as I could see, only stopped up and tinkered at, and covered over with sailcloth and tarpaulins and that sort of thing--an absolute fraud. The “Indian Girl” will never get to New York; she will go to the bottom like a cracked pot.

BERNICK.
Sehr richtig; er ist ein Aufwiegler und Störenfried; aber eine so gewissenlose Handlungsweise–. Hören Sie, Herr Krap; die Sache muß noch einmal untersucht werden. Doch strengstes Stillschweigen darüber! Unsere Werft ist blamiert, wenn die Leute so etwas erfahren.

BERNICK.
That is perfectly true; he is an agitator and a fomenter of discontent; but such an unscrupulous thing as this--Look here, Krap; you must look into the matter once more. Not a word of it to any one. The blame will fall on our yard if any one hears anything of it.

博尼克
你这话很对，他是个鼓动风潮的捣乱分子，可是像这种伤天害理的行为--!克拉普先生，我告诉你，这件事还得仔细调查调查。这会儿在谁面前都别提。要是这件事传到人家耳朵里，咱们船厂会倒霉。

Det vil desuden gøre et godt indtryk både i pressen og i samfundet idethele, når man ser, at jeg skyder alle personlige interesser tilside og lader retfærdigheden have sin gang.

BERNICK.
Die Sache anzeigen, natürlich. Wir können uns doch nicht zu Mitschuldigen machen, an einem offenkundigen Verbrechen. Mein Gewissen muß rein sein. Außerdem wird es auf die Presse wie auf die Öffentlichkeit überhaupt einen guten Eindruck machen, wenn man sieht, daß ich alle persönlichen Interessen hintansetze und der Gerechtigkeit freien Lauf lasse.

BERNICK.
Report the affair, naturally. We cannot, of course, let ourselves become accomplices in such a crime. I could not have such a thing on my conscience. Moreover, it will make a good impression, both on the press and on the public in general, if it is seen that I set all personal interests aside and let justice take its course.

博尼克
当然要报告地方当局。咱们不能跟着人家做坏事。我做事不能昧良心。再说，报告之后，报馆和地方上的人看我不计较私人利益，按着法律办事，对咱们会有好印象。

I was half reckless and half in despair. Lona, I believe it was mainly to deaden my thoughts that I let myself drift into that entanglement that ended in Johan’s going away.

Da hun blev her og leved i tarvelighed, så påstod man, at han havde taget pengene med sig til Amerika, og rygtet gjorde summen bestandig større og større.

BERNICK.
Du kannst Dir wohl vorstellen, wie nach seiner und Deiner Abreise allerlei Gerüchte die Stadt durchschwirrten. Man sagte: das war nicht sein erster leichtsinniger Streich. Dann hieß es wieder, Dorf hätte eine große Summe Geldes von Johann bekommen, damit er schweige und seines Weges gehe; und andere behaupteten, die Frau hätte es bekommen. Zu gleicher Zeit blieb es nicht verborgen, daß unser Haus seinen Verpflichtungen nur schwer nachkommen konnte. Was war natürlicher, als daß die Klatschmäuler diese beiden Gerüchte miteinander in Verbindung brachten? Da die Frau hier blieb und in Dürftigkeit lebte, so behauptete man, Johann hätte das Geld nach Amerika mitgenommen und das Gerücht nannte eine unaufhörlich wachsende Summe.

BERNICK.
You can well imagine how every kind of rumour was set on foot after you and he had gone. It is unnecessary; I understand the circumstances perfectly. The firm was in a dangerous position at the time; I had gone off, and you had my defenceless name and reputation at your mercy. Well, I do not blame you so very much for what you did; we were young and thoughtless in those days. But now I have need of the truth, and now you must speak.

BERNICK.
Hast Du bedacht, daß ich mich zu dem einen nicht bekennen kann, ohne zugleich das andere einzugestehen? Du wirst einwenden, aus unseren Büchern könnte ich beweisen, daß keine Unregelmäßigkeiten vorgekommen sind. Aber das kann ich nicht. Unsere Bücher wurden damals nicht so genau geführt. Und selbst wenn ich’s könnte, – was wäre damit gewonnen? Würde ich nicht in jedem Fall als der Mann dastehen, der sich einst durch eine Unwahrheit gerettet und der fünfzehn Jahre lang auch nicht einen Schritt getan hat, um zu verhindern, daß diese Unwahrheit und ihre Folgen Wurzel faßten? Du kennst unsere Gesellschaft nicht mehr, sonst müßtest Du wissen, daß dadurch mein Untergang besiegelt wäre.

BERNICK.
Have you considered that, if I confess to the one thing, it will inevitably mean making myself responsible for the other as well? You will say that I can show by our books that nothing dishonest happened? But I cannot; our books were not so accurately kept in those days. And even if I could, what good would it do? Should I not in any case be pointed at as the man who had once saved himself by an untruth, and for fifteen years had allowed that untruth and all its consequences to stand without having raised a finger to demolish it? You do not know our community very much, or you would realise that it would ruin me utterly.

BERNICK
(wiping the perspiration from his forehead).
Listen to me, Johan--and you too, Lona. The circumstances I am in just now are quite exceptional. I am situated in such a way that if you aim this blow at me you will not only destroy me, but will also destroy a great future, rich in blessings, that lies before the community which, after all, was the home of your childhood.

Den havde mange og vægtige stemmer for sig her i byen og i omegnen, og navnlig i pressen; men jeg fik den forhindret, fordi den vilde have skadet vor dampskibstrafik langs kysten.

BERNICK.
So hört denn. Alles hängt mit der Eisenbahnsache zusammen, und denkt nicht, daß diese Sache so ganz bedeutungslos ist. Es ist Euch gewiß bekannt, daß hier voriges Jahr eine Küstenlinie projektiert war. Sie hatte viele und gewichtige Stimmen für sich, in der Stadt wie in der Umgegend, und namentlich in der Presse; aber ich wußte sie zu verhindern, weil sie der Küstenschiffahrt geschadet hätte.

BERNICK.
I will tell you, then. It is mixed up with the railway project, and the whole thing is not quite so simple as you think. I suppose you have heard that last year there was some talk of a railway line along the coast? Many influential people backed up the idea--people in the town and the suburbs, and especially the press; but I managed to get the proposal quashed, on the ground that it would have injured our steamboat trade along the coast.

BERNICK.
Jawohl. Aber niemand wagte mich in dieser Hinsicht zu verdächtigen; mein geachteter Name deckte mich wie ein Schild. Übrigens hätte ich den Verlust auch ertragen können; doch der Ort hätte ihn nicht ertragen können. So wurde die Binnenlinie beschlossen. Nachdem dies geschehen war, vergewisserte ich mich insgeheim, ob sich eine Zweigbahn zur Stadt herunter legen ließe.

BERNICK.
Yes. But no one ventured to suspect me on that account; my honoured name fully protected me from that. For the matter of that, I could have stood the loss; but the place could not have stood it. So the inland line was decided upon. As soon as that was done, I assured myself--without saying anything about it--that a branch line could be laid to the town.

As these properties are situated at present, they are as good as valueless to their owners, who are scattered about the neighbourhood; they have therefore been sold comparatively cheap. If the purchaser had waited till the branch line began to be talked of, the proprietors would have asked exorbitant prices.

And isn’t it society itself that forces us to use these underhanded means? What would have happened if I had not acted secretly? Everybody would have wanted to have a hand in the undertaking; the whole thing would have been divided up, mismanaged and bungled. There is not a single man in the town except myself who is capable of directing so big an affair as this will be. In this country, almost without exception, it is only foreigners who have settled here who have the aptitude for big business schemes. That is the reason why my conscience acquits me in the matter. It is only in my hands that these properties can become a real blessing to the many who have to make their daily bread.

The welfare of your native place is also at stake. If things come out which cast reflections on my earlier conduct, then all my opponents will fall upon me with united vigour. A youthful folly is never allowed to be forgotten in our community. They would go through the whole of my previous life, bring up a thousand little incidents in it, interpret and explain them in the light of what has been revealed; they would crush me under the weight of rumours and slanders. I should be obliged to abandon the railway scheme; and, if I take my hand off that, it will come to nothing, and I shall be ruined and my life as a citizen will be over.

Nicht den Mut verloren, mein Junge! Ich bleibe hier und sehe dem Pastor auf die Finger.
Ab nach rechts.

LONA
(who has followed dina with her eyes, to johan).
Don’t be downhearted, my boy! I shall stay here and keep my eye on the parson.
(Goes out to the right.)

(Han går ud til højre. Købmand Vigeland og fuldmægtig Krap kommerfra konsulens værelse.)

JOHANN.
Mich rächen an Euch allen; von Euch so viele zugrunde richten, wie ich nur kann!
Ab nach rechts. VIGELAND und KRAP kommen aus Bernicks Zimmer.

JOHAN.
Revenge myself on you all; crush as many of you as I can.
(Goes out to the right. VIGELAND and KRAP come in from BERNICK’S room.)

(从右边出去。维纪兰和克拉普从博尼克办公室出来)

Se så, nu er papirerne i orden, herr konsul.

VIGELAND.

VIGELAND.
There, now the papers are in order, Mr. Bernick.

KRAP
(in a low voice).
And I suppose it is settled that the “Indian Girl” is to sail tomorrow?

KONSUL BERNICK.
Den sejler.
(Han går ind i sit værelse. Købmand Vigeland og fuldmægtig Krap gårud til højre. Hilmar Tønnesen vil følge efter dem, men i det samme stikker Olaf hovedet forsigtigt ud gennem døren til venstre.)

BERNICK.
Sie segelt.
Ab in sein Zimmer links. Vigeland und Krap ab nach rechts. Hilmar will Ihnen folgen; aber in demselben Augenblick steckt OLAF den Kopf vorsichtig durch die Türe links.

BERNICK.
Yes.
(Goes into his room. VIGELAND and KRAP go out to the right. HILMAR is just going after them, when OLAF puts his head carefully out of the door on the left.)

Ugh, is it you? Why don’t you stay upstairs? You know you are confined to the house.

Yes, I have heard that you got a thrashing today.

OLAF
(ser truende mod faderens værelse).
Han skal ikke slå mig oftere. Men véd du, at onkel Johan sejler imorgen med Amerikanerne?

OLAF
sieht drohend nach dem Zimmer des Vaters hin.
Er soll mich nicht wieder schlagen. Aber weißt Du, daß Onkel Johann mit den Amerikanern segelt?

OLAF
(looking threateningly towards his father’s room).
He shan’t thrash me any more. But have you heard that Uncle Johan is going to sail tomorrow with the Americans?

渥拉夫
(狠狠地瞧着他父亲的办公室)
往后他再也别想打我了。你听见没有，约翰舅舅明天要跟那些美国人一块儿走?

HILMAR TØNNESEN.
Hvad rager det dig? Se at komme dig ovenpå igen.

HILMAR.
Was geht das Dich an? Mach’, daß Du wieder hinaufkommst!

HILMAR.
What has that got to do with you? You had better run upstairs again.

OLAF.
Jeg kan kanske også engang komme på bøffeljagt, onkel.

OLAF.
Ich gehe vielleicht auch noch einmal mit auf die Büffeljagd, Onkel!

OLAF.
Perhaps I shall be going for a buffalo hunt, too, one of these days, uncle.

HILMAR.

OLAF.
Ja, wart’s nur ab! Morgen kriegst Du schon was zu hören.

HILMAR TØNNESEN.
Klodrian!
(Han går ud gennem haven, Olaf løber ind i værelset igen og lukker døren, da han ser fuldmægtig Krap, som kommer fra højre.)

HILMAR.
Schafskopf!
Ab durch den Garten. Olaf läuft wieder in das Zimmer und schließt die Tür, da er KRAP von rechts kommen sieht.

HILMAR.
Duffer!
(Goes out through the garden. OLAF runs into the room again and shuts the door, as he sees KRAP coming in from the right.)

(从花园里出去。克拉普正从右边进来，渥拉夫一眼看见他，马上躲进屋子，把门关上。)

FULDMÆGTIG KRAP
(går hen til konsulens dør og åbner den halvt).
Undskyld, at jeg kommer igen, herr konsul; men det trækker op til et overhændigt uvejr. (venter et øjeblik; intet svar.) Skal „Indian Girl“ sejle alligevel?
(Efter et kort ophold svarer:)

KRAP
geht nach Bernicks Tür und öffnet sie halb.
Entschuldigen Sie, daß ich noch einmal komme, Herr Konsul, – aber ein mächtiges Unwetter zieht herauf. Er wartet einen Augenblick. Keine Antwort. Soll »Indian Girl« doch segeln? –
Nach einer kurzen Pause, antwortet:

KRAP
(going to the door of bernick’s room and opening it slightly).
Excuse my bothering you again, Mr. Bernick; but there is a tremendous storm blowing up. (Waits a moment, but there is no answer.) Is the “Indian Girl” to sail, for all that?
(After a short pause, the following answer is heard.)

克拉普
(走到博尼克办公室门口，把门推开一点儿)
博尼克先生，对不起，我又来了，现在外头正在起暴风。(等了会儿，里头没有人答话) 有暴风，“印第安少女”号是不是照样开?
(过了半晌，才听见下面这句话)

KONSUL BERNICK
(inde i værelset).
„Indian Girl“ sejler alligevel.
(Fuldmægtig Krap lukker døren og går atter ud til højre.)

BERNICK
im Zimmer drin.
»Indian Girl« segelt doch.
Krap schließt die Tür und geht wieder rechts hinaus.

BERNICK
(from his room).
The “Indian Girl” is to sail, for all that.
(KRAP Shuts the door and goes out again to the right.)

博尼克
(在办公室里回答)
有暴风，“印第安少女”号还是照样开。
(克拉普关上门，仍从右边出去。)
