BONDEN.
Hvad? Livet? Kære, vene –! 
THE PEASANT.

DER BAUER.
Mein Leben? Liebster, Bester –! 
BRAND.

BRAND.

BRAND.
Nicht? 
BONDEN
(klør sig bag øret).
Nej, men der er da måde på –!
I Jesu navn, du får ej glemme,
at jeg har barn og kone hjemme. 
THE PEASANT.
[Scratching his head.]
Nay, nay,
I draw the line somewhere or other—!
In Jesus’ name, remember, pray,
At home I’ve children and a wife. 
DER BAUER
(kraut sich hinterm Ohr.)
Das ging’ wohl über meine Pflicht –!
In Jesu Namen, denk, mir sind
Doch noch zu Hause Weib und Kind. 
BRAND.
Han, som du nævnte, havde moer. 
BRAND.
He whom you mention had a mother. 
BRAND.
Er ließ die Mutter selbst allein. 
BONDEN.
Ja, det var længe før ifjor; –
da hændte der så mangt et under;
det går ej slig til nuomstunder. 
THE PEASANT.

DER BAUER.
Ja, dazumal, das mocht’ wohl sein; –
Da war manch Wunderwerk im Schwange;
Doch solcherlei vergaß sich lange. 
BRAND.
Far hjem. Dit liv er dødens vej.
Du véd ej Gud og Gud ej dig. 
BRAND.
Go home. You travel in death’s track.

BRAND.
Dein Weg ist Tod! Was hältst Du mich?
Du kennst nicht Gott, Gott kennt nicht Dich. 
BONDEN.
Hu, du er hård! 
THE PEASANT.
Hoo, you are stern! 
DER BAUER.
Hu, Du bist hart! 
SØNNEN
(trækker i ham).
Kom så afsted! 
THE SON.
[Pulling him away.]
Come back! come back! 
DER SOHN
(zerrt an ihm.)
Komm, laß ihn stehn! 
BONDEN.
Ja vel; men han skal følge med! 
THE PEASANT.
Ay, ay; but he must follow too! 
DER BAUER.
Nein, nein, der Mann muß mit uns gehn.
