[Grasps her hand firmly.]

(Greift sie fest um die Hand.)
Und nun schenk’ mir gestählten
Mutes Leben oder Tod.

AGNES.
Gå den vej, din Gud dig bød!
(Ophold.)

AGNES.
Go where God has fix’d your course.
[Pause.]

AGNES.
Folge Deines Gotts Gebot!
(Pause.)

BRAND.
Lad os gå; nu er det tid.

BRAND.
Late we linger; let us go.

BRAND.
Es ist Zeit; wir wollen gehn.

AGNES
(toneløst).
Hvor går vejen?

AGNES.
[Voiceless.]

(tonlos.)

BRAND

(Brand schweigt.)

AGNES
(peger mod havegrinden og spørger):

AGNES.
[Pointing to the garden-gate.]

AGNES
(zeigt auf die Gartenpforte und fragt:)
Den?

BRAND
(peger mod husdøren).
Nej, – did!

BRAND.
[Pointing to the house-door.]
Nay,-so!

BRAND
(zeigt auf die Haustür.)
Nein, – den!

AGNES
(løfter barnet højt på armene).
Gud! Det offer, du tør kræve,
tør jeg mod din himmel hæve!
Led mig gennem livets gys!
(ind i huset.)

AGNES.
[Raising the child aloft in her arms.]
God! The gift Thou canst require
I can lift it to thy sight!
Guide me through life’s martyr-fire!
[Goes in.]

AGNES
(hebt das Kind auf ihren Armen hoch empor.)
Gott! Was ich Dir hier gegeben,
Darf ich stolz zum Himmel heben!
Schweige nun auch Du mir nicht!
(Ab ins Haus.)
