Oath
The Oath - By Hippocrates
Hippocrates said: I swear in the name of God, the Master of life and death, the Giver of health and Creator of healing and of every treatment, and I swear in the name of Aesculapius, and of all the holy ones of god, male and female,
I swear by Apollo, the physician, and Aesculapius, and Health, and All-heal, and all the gods and goddesses,
and I call them to witness, that I will fulfil this oath and this conditions.
that, according to my ability and judgment, I will keep this Oath and this stipulation-
eum qui docuit me artem hanc introducere inter meos,
I will regard my teacher in this art as my father,
to reckon him who taught me this Art equally dear to me as my parents,
et communicare in vita, et in quo indiget dationem facere,
je partagerai avec lui mon avoir, et, le cas échéant, je pourvoirai à ses besoins;
I will share with him my means of livelihood, and I will make him my partner in my wealth, and I will give him my wealth whenever he may be in need of it.
to share my substance with him, and relieve his necessities if required;
As for his descendants, I regard them as my brothers, and I will teach them this art without any remuneration or condition, should they desire to learn it.
to look upon his offspring in the same footing as my own brothers, and to teach them this art, if they shall wish to learn it, without fee or stipulation;
And I associate together (i.e. regard as equal), in the injunctions and in the sciences contained in the art, my own children, the children of my teacher,
and that by precept, lecture, and every other mode of instruction, I will impart a knowledge of the Art to my own sons, and those of my teachers,
and the disciples on whom the oath (or covenant) has been imposed, and who have sworn to observe the medical code of honour. And I will not do so for any other than these.
and to disciples bound by a stipulation and oath according to the law of medicine, but to none others.
In all my treatment I will strive so far as lies in my power for the benefit of the patients.
I will follow that system of regimen which, according to my ability and judgment, I consider for the benefit of my patients,
And I will restrain myself from things which are injurious to them, or are likely in my opinion to do them harm.
and abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous.
neque dabo ulli farmacum rogatus mortale, neque narrabo consilium tale.
Je ne remettrai à personne du poison, si on m’en demande, ni ne prendrai l’initiative d’une pareille suggestion;
And I will not give them any poisonous drug if they ask for it, nor will I advise them thus.
I will give no deadly medicine to any one if asked, nor suggest any such counsel;
Nor will I contemplate administering any pessary which may cause abortion.
and in like manner I will not give to a woman a pessary to produce abortion.
And in my treatment and in the practice of my art I will keep myself pure and holy.
With purity and with holiness I will pass my life and practice my Art.
And I will not operate on those who have stone in the bladder; rather I will leave it for those whose profession it is.
I will not cut persons laboring under the stone, but will leave this to be done by men who are practitioners of this work.
And I will enter every abode into which I may go only for the benefit of the sick,
Into whatever houses I enter, I will go into them for the benefit of the sick,
being in a state devoid of (all deliberate intention of) wrong-doing, injustice mischief-making,
and will abstain from every voluntary act of mischief and corruption;
such as might be intended in all other transactions, or in respect of sexual relations with woman or man, whether free or slaves.
and, further from the seduction of females or males, of freemen and slaves.
And as of the things which I may see or hear during the time of treating the sick, or at times other than those in which I am so engaged, about such behaviour of men as should not be talked of outside, I will keep silence, considering that such things should not be discussed.
Whatever, in connection with my professional practice or not, in connection with it, I see or hear, in the life of men, which ought not to be spoken of abroad, I will not divulge, as reckoning that all such should be kept secret.
Si je remplis ce serment sans l’enfreindre, qu’il me soit donné de jouir heureusement de la vie et de ma profession, honoré à jamais parmi les hommes;
He who fulfils this oath and does not violate any part of it, to him will it be granted to carry out his treatment and his art under the most excellent and favourable conditions, and to be praised by all men in future for ever;
While I continue to keep this Oath unviolated, may it be granted to me to enjoy life and the practice of the art, respected by all men, in all times!
while the contrary will be the portion of him who transgresses it.
But should I trespass and violate this Oath, may the reverse be my lot!
