Je me complais avec joie dans les bonnes actions de tous les êtres ; par elles, ils se reposent des mauvaises destinées. Puissent ces malheureux être heureux !

I rejoice exceedingly in all creatures’ good works that end the sorrows of their evil lot; may the sorrowful find happiness!

saṃsāraduḥkhanirmokṣam anumode śarīriṇām |
bodhisattvatvabuddhatvam anumode ca tāyinām ||2||

Je me complais dans délivrance qu’ont obtenue [certaines] créatures, [Disciples et « Bouddhas pour eux-mêmes »] ; je me complais dans la qualité de Bodhisattva et de Bouddha qui appartient aux éternels Protecteurs du monde.

I rejoice in the deliverance of embodied beings from the griefs of life’s wanderings, and in the Sonship of Enlightenment, and the Enlightenment that belongs to the Saviours.

cittotpādasamudrāṃś ca sarvasattvasukhāvahān |
sarvasattvahitādhānān anumode ca śāsinām ||3||

Je me complais dans les grands observateurs de la loi, [dans les Bodhisattvas], océans insondables de pensée, véhicules du bonheur universel, réceptacles de salut pour toute créature.

I rejoice in the Commanders’ oceans of Thought, that bring happiness and establish welfare for all creatures.

puṇyānumodanā ||
sarvāsu dikṣu saṃbuddhān prārthayāmi kṛtāñjaliḥ |
dharmapradīpaṃ kurvantu mohād duḥkhaprapātinām ||4||

Je prie, prosterné, les parfaits Bouddhas de toutes les régions : qu’ils allument la lampe de la Loi pour les ignorants qui tombent dans le précipice du malheur.

With clasped hands I entreat the perfectly Enlightened Ones who stand in all regions that they kindle the lamp of the Law for them who in their blindness fall into sorrow.

adhyoṣaṇā ||
nirvātukāmāṃś ca jinān yācayāmi kṛtāñjaliḥ |
kalpān anantāṃs tiṣṭhantu mā bhūd andham idaṃ jagat ||5||

Je supplie, prosterné, les Vanqueurs qui désirent le nirvāṇa : qu’ils demeurent pendant des millénaires sans fin, de peur que le monde soit aveugle.

With clasped hands I pray the Conquerors who yearn for the Stillness that they abide here for endless aeons, lest this world become blind.

yācanā ||
evaṃ sarvam idaṃ kṛtvā yan mayāsāditaṃ śubham |
tena syāṃ sarvasattvānāṃ sarvaduḥkhapraśāntikṛt ||6||

Par le mérite de toute ces bonnes æuvres, je souhaite d’apaiser toute douleur de toute créature ;

In reward for all this righteousness that I have won by my works I would fain become soother of all the sorrows of all creatures.

glānānām asmi bhaiṣajyaṃ bhaveyaṃ vaidya eva ca |
tadupasthāyakaś caiva yāvad rogāpunarbhavaḥ ||7||

dêtre le remède, le médicin, le serviteur de malades, — tant qu’il y aura des maladies :

May I be a balm to the sick, their healer and servitor, until sickness come never again;

kṣutpipāsāvyathāṃ hanyām annapānapravarṣaṇaiḥ |
durbhikṣāntarakalpeṣu bhaveyaṃ pānabhojanam ||8||

déteindre par des pluies de nourriture et de boisson le feu de la faim et de la soif; d’être moi-même, — pendant la famine de la fin du monde, — boisson et nourriture ;

may I quench with rains of food and drink the anguish of hunger and thirst; may I be in the famine of the ages’ end their drink and meat;

daridrāṇāṃ ca sattvānāṃ nidhiḥ syām aham akṣayaḥ |
nānopakaraṇākārair upatiṣṭheyam agrataḥ ||9||

je souhaite d’être aux pauvres un inépuisable trésor, un serviteur qui fournisse tout ce qui leur manque.

may I become an unfailing store for the poor, and serve them with manifold things for their need.

ātmabhāvāṃs tathā bhogān sarvatryadhvagataṃ śubham |
nirapekṣas tyajāmy eṣa sarvasattvārthasiddhaye ||10||

Ma vie dans toutes mes renaissances, tous mes biens, tout mon mérite acquis, présent out à venir, je l’abandonne, sans retour sur moi-même, pour réaliser le salut de toute créature.

My own being and my pleasures, all my righteousness in the past, present, and future I surrender indifferently, that all creatures may win to their end.

sarvatyāgaś ca nirvāṇaṃ nirvāṇārthi ca me manaḥ |
tyaktavyaṃ cen mayā sarvaṃ varaṃ sattveṣu dīyatām ||11||

La délivrance, n’est-ce pas tout abandonner? Et mon âme souhaite la délivrance. S’il faut tout abandonner, mieux vaut tout donner aux créatures.

The Stillness lies in surrender of all things, and my spirit is fain for the Stillness; if I must surrender all, it is best to give it for fellow-creatures.

yathāsukhīkṛtaś¹ cātmā mayāyaṃ sarvadehinām |
ghnantu nindantu vā nityam ākirantu ca pāṃsubhiḥ ||12||

Je me remets au bon plaisir de tous les vivants: ils peuvent me frapper, m’outrager, me couvrir de poussière,

I yield myself to all living things to deal with me as they list; they may smite or revile me for ever, bestrew me with dust,

krīḍantu mama kāyena hasantu vilasantu ca |
dattas tebhyo mayā kāyaś cintayā kiṃ mamānayā ||13||

jouer avec mon corps, faire de moi une risée et une moquerie. Je leur ai donné mon corps et tout cela m’est égal.

play with my body, laugh and wanton; I have given them my body, why shall I care?

kārayantu ca karmāṇi yāni teṣāṃ sukhāvaham |
anarthaḥ kasyacin mā bhūn mām ālambya kadā cana ||14||

Qu’ils me fassent faire tout ce qui peut leur procurer du plaisir; mais qu’aucune peine ne résulte pour eux, — pour personne, — de leurs rapports avec moi.

Let them make me do whatever works bring them pleasure; but may never mishap befall any of them by reason of me.

yeṣāṃ kruddhāprasannā² vā mām ālambya matir bhavet |
teṣāṃ sa eva³ hetuḥ syān nityaṃ sarvārthasiddhaye⁴ ||15||

Que leur colère même et leur mécontentement contre moi soient une cause de la réalisation de leur double fin.

If the spirit of any be wroth or pleased with me, may that be ever a cause for them to win all their desires.

abhyākhyāsyanti māṃ ye ca ye cānye ’py apakāriṇaḥ |
utprāsakās tathānye ’pi⁵ sarve syur bodhibhāginaḥ ||16||

Les uns me calomnient, les autres me font du mal. D’autres me raillent, d’autres [sont indifférents ou bienveilants] : que tous obtiennent l’illumination.

May all who slander me, or do me hurt, or jeer at me, gain a share in Enlightenment.

anāthānām ahaṃ nāthaḥ sārthavāhaś ca yāyinām |
pārepsūnāṃ ca naubhūtaḥ setuḥ saṃkrama eva ca ||17||

Je veux être un protecteur pour ceux qui n’en ont point ; un guide pour les voyageurs ; pour ceux qui désirent l’autre rive, un beteau, une digue ou un pont ;

I would be a protector of the unprotected, a guide of wayfarers, a ship, a dyke, and a bridge for them who seek the further Shore;

dīpārthinām ahaṃ dīpaḥ śayyā śayyārthinām aham |
dāsārthinām ahaṃ dāso bhaveyaṃ sarvadehinām ||18||

une lampe pour ceuc qui sont dans les ténèbres ; un lit pour ceux qui veulent se coucher ; un esclave pour ceux qui ont besoin d’un esclave.

a lamp for them who need a lamp, a bed for those who need a bed, a slave for all beings who need a slave.

cintāmaṇir bhadraghaṭaḥ siddhavidyā mahauṣadhiḥ |
bhaveyaṃ kalpavṛkṣaś ca kāmadhenuś ca dehinām ||19||

Je veux être pour toute créature une pierre magique, une cruche miraculeuse, une formule souveraine, une herbe de guérison, un arbre à souhaits, une vache d’abondance.

I would be a magic gem, a lucky jar, a spell of power, a sovereign balm, a wishing-tree, a cow of plenty, for embodied beings.

pṛthivyādīni bhūtāni niḥśeṣākāśavāsinām |
sattvānām aprameyāṇāṃ yathā bhogāny anekadhā ||20||

De même que les éléments, terre, [eau, feu et vent] sont de toutes manières, [et sans égoïsme], au service des innombrables créatures qui habitent l’immensité du monde,

As the earth and other elements are for the manifold service of the countless creatures dwelling in the whole of space,

evam ākāśaniṣṭhasya sattvadhātor anekadhā |
bhaveyam upajīvyo ’haṃ yāvat sarve na nirvṛtāḥ ||21||

ainsi puissé-je, et de toute maniére, dans l’immensité du monde, contribuer à la vie de tout ce qui est, — aussi longtemts que toute créature n’est pas délivrée.

so may I in various wise support the whole sphere of life lodged in space, until all be at peace.

yathā gṛhītaṃ sugatair bodhicittaṃ purātanaiḥ |
te bodhisattvaśikṣāyām ānupūrvyā⁶ yathā sthitāḥ ||22||

Dans les mêmes dispositions où se trouvaient les anciens Bouddhas pour prendre la pensée de Bodhi ; de même qu’ils se sont fixès dans les observances des bodhisattvas, pratiquant dans l’ordre les [vertus parfaites] ;

As the Blessed of old took the Thought of Enlightenment and held fast to the rule for sons of Enlightenment in the order thereof,

tadvad utpādayāmy eṣa bodhicittaṃ jagaddhite |
tadvad eva ca tāḥ śikṣāḥ śikṣiṣyāmi yathā kramam ||23||

dans ces mêmes dispositions, je conçois la pensée de Bodhi pour le salut du monde ; de même, je pratiquerai dans l’ordre les observances.

so do I frame the Thought of Enlightenment for the weal of the world, and so will I observe these rules in their sequence.

evaṃ gṛhītvā matimān bodhicittaṃ prasādataḥ |
punaḥ pṛṣṭhasya puṣṭyarthaṃ cittam evaṃ praharṣayet ||24||

Et quand le sage, avec amour, a pris pieusement possession de la pensée de Bodhi, il exalte cette pensée pour en assurer dans l’avenir la croissance [saufgarde, pureté, développement] :

When he has thus taken the Thought of Enlightenment in a spirit of grace, the sage must fill his thought with gladness in order to strengthen the issue.

adya me saphalaṃ janma sulabdho mānuṣo bhavaḥ |
adya buddhakule jāto buddhaputro ’smi sāmpratam ||25||

Aujourd’hui ma naissance ets féconde, et je profite de ma qualité d’homme ; aujourd’hui je suis né dans la famille du Bouddha : je suis maintenant fils du Bouddha.

This day my birth is fruitful, my human life a blessing; this day have I been born in the race of the Enlightened, now am I their son.

tathādhunā mayā kāryaṃ svakulocitakāriṇām |
nirmalasya kulasyāsya kalaṅko na bhaved yathā ||26||

Et désormais je dois accomplir le devoir où ma famille est accoutumée : je ne veux pas être une tache dans cette famille immaculée.

And henceforth mine is the task of them who work worthily of their race, lest any blemish fall upon this stainless stock.

andhaḥ saṃkārakūṭebhyo yathā ratnam avāpnuyāt |
tathā kathaṃcid apy etad bodhicittaṃ mamoditam ||27||

Comme un aveugle trouve une perle dans un tas d’ordures, je ne sais par quel miracle la pensée de Bodhi est née en moi :

This Thought of Enlightenment has arisen within me I know not how, even as a gem might be gotten by a blind man from a dunghill;

jaganmṛtyuvināśāya jātam etad rasāyanam |
jagaddāridryaśamanaṃ nidhānam idam akṣayam ||28||

élixir qui soustrait les créatures à la mort universelle ; trésor inépuisable qui enrichit la pauvreté universelle ;

it is an elixir made to destroy death in the world, an unfailing treasure to relieve the world’s poverty,

jagadvyādhipraśamanaṃ bhaiṣajyam idam uttamam |
bhavādhvabhramaṇaśrāntajagadviśrāmapādapaḥ ||29||

remède suprème contre l’universelle maladie; arbre qui repose les créatures fatiguées d’errer dans les chemins de l’existence ;

a supreme balm to allay the world’s sickness, a tree under which may rest all creatures wearied with wandering over life’s paths,

durgatyuttaraṇe setuḥ sāmānyaḥ sarvayāyinām |
jagatkleśopaśamana uditaś cittacandramāḥ ||30||

pont ouvert à tous les voyageurs pour traverser les mauvaises destinées. Elle se lève la lune de la [bonne] pensée pour calmer dans tout l’univers la chaleur des passions,

a bridge open to all wayfarers for passing over hard ways, a moon of thought arising to cool the fever of the world’s sin,

jagadajñānatimiraprotsāraṇamahāraviḥ |
saddharmakṣīramathanān navanītaṃ samutthitam ||31||

[ou bien] c’est un soleil qui chasse de l’univers les ténèbres de l’ignorance ; un beurre nouveau produit par le barattement du lait de la bonne loi.

a great sun driving away the gloom of the world’s ignorance, a fresh butter created by the churning of the milk of the Good Law.

sukhabhogabubhukṣitasya vā janasārthasya bhavādhvacāriṇaḥ |
sukhasattram idaṃ hy upasthitaṃ sakalābhyāgatasattvatarpaṇam ||32||

4. Read ’gron po(?)

Le banquet de bonheur est préparé : elle y est conviée, — car tous ceux qui viendront de n’importe où seront rassasiés, — la caravane des voyageurs errant par les existences et affamés de bonheur.

For the caravan of beings who wander through life’s paths hungering to taste of happiness this banquet of bliss is prepared, that will satisfy all creatures coming to it.

jagad adya nimantritaṃ mayā sugatatvena sukhena cāntarā |
purataḥ khalu sarvatāyinām abhinandantu surāsurādayaḥ ||33||

Je convie aujourd’hui l’univers entier à la possession de la Bodhi ; en attendant, aux félicités des existences. Je prends à témoin tous les éternels [Protecteurs] ; que les dieux et les Asuras se réjouissent !

I summon to-day the world to the estate of Enlightenment, and meanwhile to happiness; may gods, daemons, and other beings rejoice in the presence of all the Saviours!

bodhicaryāvatāre bodhicittaparigraho nāma tṛtīyaḥ paricchedaḥ ||

byaṇ cub sems dpa’i spyod pa la ’jug pa las | | byaṅ cub gyi sems yoṅs su gzuṅ ba źes bya ba ste | | le’u gñis pa’o || ||

byaṅ chub sems dpa’i spyod pa la ’jug la las | byaṅ chub kyi sems yoṅs su gzuṅ ba źes bya ba ste le’u gsum pa’o ||
