ونحن لم نُقْدِم على فنّ الأدب - وهو في الوقت الحاضر فنّ لا يورث صاحبه غير الفاقة والشقاء - إلا ونحن مدفوعون بذاك الأمل ؛ 
wa-naḥnu lam nuqdim ʕalà fanni ’l-ʔadab – wa-huwa fī ’l-waqti ’l-ḥāḍir fannun lā yūriṯu ṣāḥiba-hū ġayra ’l-fāqaẗ wa’l-šaqāʔ – ʔillā wa-naḥnu madfūʕūna bi-ḏāka ’l-ʔamal; 
And we do not adventure into the art of literature – which currently is an art that earns its masters nothing but poverty and misery – unless driven by that hope,
