Note on the transliteration:
The transliteration system of the BP/TLB is based on the Unicode/UTF-8 system. However, there may be difficulties with some of the letters – particularly on PC/Windows-based systems, but not so much on the Mac. We have chosen the most accepted older and traditional systems of transliteration against, e.g, Wylie for Tibetan, since with Unicode it is possible, in Sanskrit and Tibetan, etc., to represent one sound with one letter in almost all the cases (excepting Sanskrit and Tibetan aspirated letters, and Tibetan tsa, tsha, dza). We thus do not use the Wylie system which widely employs two letters for one sound (ng, ny, sh, zh etc.).
 
Important:
We ask you in particular to note the use of the ’ apostrophe and not the ' representing the avagrāha in Sanskrit, and most important the ’a-chuṅ in Tibetan. On the Mac the ’ is Alt-M.

ratnaṃ yathoccāragataṃ juguspitaṃ yathā syān na tathā yathā pura ·
bahuśrrutasyāpi vadāmi bhikṣoḥ satkāramīḍe patanaṃ tatheva ·
tadyathāpi nāma kāśyapa tad eva vaiḍūryaṃ mahāmaṇiratnam ameddhyāvaskarād uddhṛtaṃ bhavet sudhautaṃ suprakṣālitaṃ suparimārjitaṃ · taṃ maṇiratnasvabhāvam eva na vijahaty evam eva kāśyapa bahuśrruto ’lpaprayatnena sarvakleśān viśodhayati mahāprajñāratnasvabhāvam eva na vijahāti 6 
譬如摩尼珠墮於屎中。雖多諷經而不持戒。 
譬如摩尼珠墮不淨中無所復直。如是迦葉。多有沙門梵志貪著財利。當知亦如摩尼珠墮不淨中無所復直。 
迦葉。譬如摩尼寶珠墮不淨中不可復著。如是多聞貪著利養。便不復能利益天人。 
佛告迦葉。譬如摩尼寶珠墮落不淨之中。其珠體觸不堪使用。迦葉。如是若彼比丘雖具多聞。墮落不淨利養之中。諸天人民不生敬愛。我今於此而說頌曰。
譬如摩尼寶 墮落不淨中
染污得其觸 使用而不堪
比丘亦如是 雖復具多聞
墜墮於不淨 名聞利養中
諸天及人民 而不生愛敬

suvarṇamāleva mṛtasya śīrṣe nyastā yathā syād atha puṣpamālā ·
kāṣāyavastrāṇi tathāviśīle dṛṣṭvā {n}na kuryān manasaḥ pradoṣaṃ 
譬如死人著金傅飾。不持戒反被袈裟。像如持戒沙門。 
譬如死人著金花鬘。如是迦葉。人不持戒被著袈裟。亦復如是。 
譬如死人著金瓔珞。多聞破戒比丘。被服法衣受他供養亦復如是。 
佛告迦葉。譬如有人忽爾命終。以其金冠花鬘莊嚴頭面。迦葉。如是若彼比丘破盡戒律。而以袈裟莊嚴其身有何所益。我今於此而說頌曰。
譬如命終人 以其好花鬘
及用金寶冠 嚴飾屍首上
彼人無所用 比丘亦如是
而以破戒身 被挂於袈裟
嚴飾作威儀 終無於利益

susnātasyānuliptasya śrreṣṭhiputrasya śobhanaṃ śīrṣe
caṇpakamāleva śubhagandhāmanoramāṃ
yathā tatheva kāṣāyaṃ saṃvarasthe bahuśrrute
draṣṭavyaṃ śīlasaṃpanna jinaputre guṇānvite 2 
譬如長者子服飾。著新衣著新傅飾。多諷經持戒好亦如是。 
譬如長者子淨自澡浴。被白淨衣著薝蔔華鬘。如是迦葉。多聞持戒被著袈裟。亦復如是。 
如長者子剪除爪甲。淨自洗浴塗赤栴檀。著新白衣頭著華鬘中外相稱。如是迦葉。多聞持戒被服法衣。受他供養亦復如是。 
佛告迦葉。譬如有人洗浴清淨以其香油塗潤身上及頭髻指甲。身著白衣戴瞻蔔花鬘為上族子。迦葉。如是若彼比丘多聞智慧。身被法服儀相具足為佛弟子。我今於此而說頌曰。
譬如世間人 洗浴身清淨
塗潤好香油 頭以華鬘飾
身著於白衣 而稱上族子
比丘亦如是 多聞具總持
戒德恒清淨 被挂於法服
儀相而具足 此名真佛子

佛語迦葉。有四事。不持戒像類持戒人。何等為四。一者若有比丘禁戒所說不犯缺也。雖有是有著呼有人。二者若比丘悉知律經。著行是我所行。三者若有比丘著我是我所。四者常行等心。等心於人著怖畏於死生。是為沙門不持戒名持戒。 
復次迦葉。有四不持戒似如持戒。云何為四。若有比丘護持禁戒成就威儀。至微小事當畏懼之。持比丘淨戒。成就威儀禮節。身口意行正令清淨。而計吾我。是謂迦葉一不持戒似如持戒。復次比丘。誦律通利察住律法不斷身見。是謂迦葉二不持戒似如持戒。復次比丘。行慈眾生聞說諸法不起不滅。而懷恐怖。是謂迦葉三不持戒似如持戒。 
又大迦葉。四種破戒比丘似善持戒。何謂為四。有一比丘具足持戒。大小罪中心常怖畏。所聞戒法皆能履行。身業清淨口業清淨。意業清淨正命清淨。而是比丘說有我論。是初破戒似善持戒。復次迦葉。有一比丘誦持戒律。隨所說行身見不滅。是名第二破戒比丘似善持戒。復次迦葉。有一比丘具足持戒。取眾生相而行慈心。聞一切法本來無生心大驚怖。是名第三破戒比丘似善持戒。復次迦葉。有一比丘具足修行。十二頭陀見有所得。是名第四破戒比丘似善持戒。 
佛告迦葉。有四種破戒比丘喻持戒影像。迦葉白言。云何四種破戒。迦葉。有一比丘具足受持別解脫戒。善知禁律於微細罪深生怕怖。恒依學處說戒清淨。身口意業具足無犯。食離邪命此有其過。所以者何。執自功能成戒取故。迦葉。此是第一破戒喻持戒影像。復次迦葉。有一比丘善知禁律常持戒行。密用三業。彼有身見。執情不捨故。迦葉。此是第二破戒喻持戒影像。復次迦葉。有一比丘恒行慈心悲愍有情。具足慈善聞一切法無生。心生驚怕。迦葉。此是第三破戒喻持戒影像。復次迦葉。有一比丘行彼十二頭陀大行具足無缺。而有我心住著我人之相。迦葉。此是第四破戒喻持戒影像。迦葉。此四種破戒喻持戒影像。

śīlaṃ śīlam iti kāśyapa ucyate · yatra nātmā + nairātma + nātmīyaṃ na satvo na satvaprajñaptiḥ na kkriyā na nākkriyā · na karaṇaṃ nākaraṇaṃ · na cāro nācāraḥ na pracāro nāpracāraḥ na nāmaṃ na rūpa · na nimittaṃ nānimittaṃ · na śamo na praśamaḥ na grāho notsargaḥ na grrāhyaṃ nāgrāhya · na satvo na satvaprajñaptiḥ na vāṅ na vākprajñaptiḥ na cittaṃ na cittaprajñaptiḥ na loko nālokaḥ na niśrayo nāniśrrayaḥ nātmaśīlotkarṣaṇā · na paraduḥśīlapaṃsanā · na śīlamanyanā · na śīlakalpanā · na vikalpanā · na saṃkalpanāḥ na parikalpanā · iyam ucyate kāśyapa āryāṇāṃ śīla · anāsravam aparyāpaṃnaṃ traidhātukānugataṃ sarvaniśrayāpagataṃ · 
佛語迦葉言。禁戒無形不著三界。何因名為戒。無吾無我無人無命無意無名無種無化無教。無有作者。無所來無所去。無制無滅。無身所犯無口所犯無心所犯。無世無計無世所住。亦無有戒亦不無戒。亦無所念亦無敗壞亦無坐立。是故為禁戒矣。 
復次比丘。行十二法淨功德行。而起見我有我所。是謂迦葉四不持戒似如持戒。如是迦葉。戒稱戒者。謂無我亦無我所。無作不作。無事非事。亦無威儀無行不行。無名色相。亦無非相。無息不息。無取無捨。無可取者。亦無不可捨。不施設眾生。亦不施設無眾生。無有口行無不口行。無心不心。無倚不倚。無戒不戒。是謂迦葉無漏聖戒。而無所墮。出於三界離一切倚。 
復次迦葉。善持戒者。無我無我所。無作無非作。無有所作。亦無作者。無行無非行。無色無名。無相無非相。無滅無非滅。無取無捨。無可取無可棄。無眾生無眾生名。無心無心名。無世間無非世間。無依止無非依止。不以戒自高不下他戒。亦不憶想分別此戒。是名諸聖所持戒行。無漏不繫不受三界。遠離一切諸依止法。 
復次迦葉。若說此戒。無人無我無眾生無壽命。無行亦無不行。無作亦無不作。非犯非非犯。無名無色非無名色。無相非無相。無息念非無息念。無取無捨非無取捨。非受非不受。無識無心非無識心。無世間亦無出世間。無所住亦非無住。無自持戒無他持戒。於此戒中離諸毀謗。無迷無執。迦葉。此說。聖著無漏正戒。遠離三界一切住處。

na śīlavantasya malaṃ na kiṃcana na śīlavantasya mado na niśrayaḥ
na śīlavantasya tamo na bandhanam* na śīlavantasya rajo na doṣaḥ
śāntapraśānta upaśāntamānaso kalpaḥ vikalpāpagato niraṃgaṇaḥ
sarveñjanāmanyanavipramuktaḥ sa śīlavān kāśyapa buddhaśāsane{ḥ}
na kāyasāvekṣi na jīvitārthiko hy anarthikaḥ sarvabhavopapattibhiḥ
samyaggataḥ s. + + + pratiṣṭhitaḥ sa śīlavān kāśyapa buddhaśāsane · 3
na lokalipto na ca lokaniśritoḥ ālokaprāpto amamo na kiñcanaḥ
na cātmasaṃjñīna pareṣu saṃjñī saṃjñā parijñāya viśuddhaśīlaḥ 4
yasyā na ’pāraṃ na ca paramadhyaṃ a pārapāre ca na jātu saktaḥ
avabaddhasakto akuho anāsravaḥ sa śīlavān kāśyapa buddhaśāsane · 5 
爾時佛說曰。戒無瑕穢著也。戒者無奢無瞋恚。安定就泥洹。如是為持戒。不愛身亦不愛命。不樂於五道。悉曉了人於法。於佛法中是故為戒。適不在中邊止也。中邊不著不著不縛。 
出於三界離一切倚。於是世尊。說此頌曰。
持戒不有亦無垢 持戒無憍而不倚
持戒不闇無所縛 持戒無塵無污穢
究竟止息無上寂 無想不想亦無穢
諸慟眾倚一切斷 是為迦葉持佛戒
不著身口不倚命 不貪一切受生死
以正去來住正道 是為迦葉持佛戒
不著世間不倚世 得明無闇無所有
無有己想無他想 斷一切想得清淨
無此彼岸無中間 於此彼岸亦不著
無縛無詐無諸漏 是為迦葉持佛戒 
遠離一切諸依止法。爾時世尊。欲明了此義。而說偈言。
清淨持戒者 無垢無所有
持戒無憍慢 亦無所依止
持戒無愚癡 亦無有諸縛
持戒無塵污 亦無有違失
持戒心善軟 畢竟常寂滅
遠離於一切 憶想之分別
解脫諸動念 是淨持佛戒
不貪惜身命 不用諸有生
修習於正行 安住正道中
是名為佛法 真實淨持戒
持戒不染世 亦不依世法
逮得智慧明 無闇無所有
無我無彼想 已知見諸相
是名為佛法 真實淨持戒
無此無彼岸 亦無有中間
於無此彼中 亦無有所著
無縛無諸漏 亦無有欺誑
是名為佛法 真實淨持戒 
爾時世尊而說頌曰。
所持離垢戒 非住我人相
無犯亦無持 無縛亦無解
微妙甚深善 遠離於疑惑
迦葉此戒相 如來真實說
所持無垢戒 而於彼世間
非為自身命 普濟諸群生
同入真如際 迦葉此戒相
如來真實說
所持離垢戒 於彼我人中
無染亦無淨 無暗亦無明
無得亦無失 不住於此岸
不到於彼岸 亦非於中流
縛脫而平等 無住如虛空
非相非非相 迦葉此戒相
如來真實說
所持無垢戒

6 na śikṣayā manyati prātimokṣe na cāpi tena bhavateha tanmayo ·
athottaraṃ margati āryamārge viśuddhaśīlasya ime nimittā 7
na śīlaparamo na samādhitaṃn mayoḥ paryeṣate-d-uttari prajñabhāvanā ·
anopālaṃbhaṃ āryāṇa gotraṃ viśuddhaśīla sugataṃ praśastam*
satkāyadṛṣṭe hi vimuktamānaso ahaṃ mama itīha na tasya bhoti·
adhimucyate śunyatabuddhagocaraṃm imasya śīlasya samo na vidyate · 9
śīle pratiṣṭhāya samādhi śuddhaḥ samādhiprāptasya ca prajñabhāvanā ·
prajñāya jñānaṃ bhavate viśuddhaṃ viśuddhajñānasya ca śīlasaṃpadā · 10 
譬空中風。是為持戒名及種無所止也。人定心無所著。無我想無人想。曉是者是為淨持戒也。不輕於禁戒不自貢高。常欲守道持戒。如是無有能過者。離我所想。自我及是我所。都無有是也。信於空及佛法行不沾污於世。不著於世間。從冥入明適無所因。不著於三界。是為持戒。 
謂名及色意不著 禪定正念調御心
無有吾我無我所 是為迦葉稱住戒
不倚禁戒得解脫 不叩持戒為歡喜
於此上求八正道 是謂持戒清淨相
不期持戒不依定 謂修習此得智慧
無有無得是聖性 清淨聖戒佛所稱
謂己身見心解脫 我是我所終不起
心能解空佛境界 如是持戒莫能勝
善住淨戒得禪定 已獲禪定修智慧
已修智慧便得脫 已逮解脫平等戒 
心不著名色 不生我我所
是名為安住 真實淨持戒
雖行持諸戒 其心不自高
亦不以為上 遇戒求聖道
是名為真實 清淨持戒相
不以戒為最 亦不貴三昧
過此二事已 修習於智慧
空寂無所有 諸聖賢之性
是清淨持戒 諸佛所稱讚
心解脫身見 除滅我我所
信解於諸佛 所行空寂法
如是持聖戒 則為無有比
依戒得三昧 三昧能修慧
依因所修慧 逮得於淨智
已得淨智者 具足清淨戒 
所持無垢戒 不著於名色
不住於等引 恒以淨妙心
離我有無相 於彼別解脫
遠離持犯等 無戒無不戒
無定亦無散 依此而行道
智觀無二取 此戒淨微妙
安住三摩地 三摩地生觀
智慧自清淨 是名具足戒

| de yi gong du ’phags pa’i lam rnams tshol byed pa || de ni tshul khrims rnam par dag pa’i mtshan ma’o |
| tshul khrims gtso bor ma yin ting ’dzin der chags med || de yi gong du shes rab bsgom pa yongs su tshol |
| dmigs pa med pa ’phags pa rnams kyi rigs yin te || tshul khrims de ni bde bar gshegs pas rab tu bsngags |

asmin khalu punar gāthābhinirhāre bhāṣyamāṇe aṣṭānāṃ bhikṣuśatānām anupādāyāsravebhyaś cittāni vimuktāni · dvātriṃśatīnāṃ ca prāṇasahasrāṇāṃ virajo vigatamalaṃ dharmeṣu dharmacakṣur viśuddhaṃ · paṃca bhikṣuśatāni dhyānalābhī utthāyāsanebhyaḥ prakkrāntāni imāṃ gaṃbhīrā dharmadeśanām avataraṃto nāvagāhamānāḥ anadhimucyamānāḥ 
時佛說是經法。二萬二千諸天人。及世間人民諸龍鬼神。皆得須陀洹道。八百沙門皆得阿羅漢道。五百沙門素皆行守意得禪道。聞佛說深經皆不解不信。便從眾坐避易亡去。 
說此偈已。八百比丘逮得漏盡。三萬二千人遠塵離垢。諸法眼生。五百比丘昔已得定。聞佛說此甚深之法。不能解了從座起去。 
說是語時。五百比丘不受諸法心得解脫。三萬二千人遠塵離垢得法眼淨。五百比丘聞是深法心不信解。不能通達從坐起去。 
爾時世尊說此伽他法時。八百苾芻漏盡意解心得解脫。三十億人遠塵離垢得法眼淨五百苾芻得三摩地。聞此甚深微妙戒法。難解難入不信不學。從座而起速離佛會。

athāyuṣmān mahākāśyapo bhagavaṃtam etad avocat* imāni bhagavāṃ paṃca bhikṣuśatāni ddhyānalābhīny utthāyāsanebhyaḥ prakkrāṃtāni · imā gaṃbhīrā dharmadeśanām avataraṃto nāvagāhaṃto-m-anadhimucyamānāḥ bhagavān āha · tathā hy ete kāśyapa bhikṣavaḥ anadhimānikā te-m-anadhimucyamānā imāṃ gaṃbhīrā gāthābhinirhārām anāsravaṃ śīlaviśuddhinirdeśaṃ śrrutvā nāvataraṃti nādhimucyaṃti nāvagāhaṃti tat kasmād dheto gaṃbhīro yaṃ kāśyapa gāthābhinirhāraṃ gaṃbhīraṃ buddhānā bhagavaṃtānāṃ bodhi sā na śakyam anavaropitakuśalamūle pāpamitraparigṛhīte-r-anadhimuktibahule satvair adhimucyituṃ vā paryāpunituṃ vā avatarituṃ vā · 
迦葉比丘白佛言。是五百守禪比丘。聞深經不解不信摩訶而去。佛語迦葉。是五百守禪比丘信餘眾多。聞深法教不解不信。 
於是大迦葉。白世尊曰。此五百比丘昔已得定。聞是深法不能解了即便起去。世尊告大迦葉曰。此五百比丘貢高慢故。不能解此無漏淨戒。是所說法甚深微妙。諸佛之道極甚深妙。非是未種善根與惡知識共相隨者所能解了。 
爾時大迦葉白佛言。世尊。是五百比丘皆得禪定。不能信解入深法故從坐起去。佛語迦葉。是諸比丘皆增上慢。聞是清淨無漏戒相。不能信解不能通達。佛所說偈其義甚深。所以者何。諸佛菩提極甚深故。若不厚種善根。惡知識所守。信解力少難得信受。 
是時尊者大迦葉白世尊言。此五百苾芻雖得三摩地。云何聞此甚深之法難解難入不信不學。即從座起速便而退。佛言。迦葉。彼等五百苾芻我見未除。於此無漏清淨戒法聞已難解難入。心生驚怖所以不信不行。迦葉。此伽他戒法甚深微妙。三佛菩提皆從此出。彼等罪友於此解脫妙善而不能入。 
de nas bcom ldan ’das la tshe dang ldan pa ’od srung chen pos ’di skad ces gsol to || bcom ldan ’das dge slong bsam gtan thob pa lnga brgya po ’di dag chos bstan pa zab mo ’di la mi ’jug ste | ma rtogs ma mos pas stan las langs te mchis so || bcom ldan ’das kyis bka’ stsal pa | ’od srung ’di ltar dge slong mngon pa’i nga rgyal can ’di dag ni tshul khrims rnam par dag pa zag pa med pa ’di la mi ’jug ste | mi rtogs mi mos shing skrag ste kun tu dngangs | kun tu rab tu dngangs so || ’od srung tshigs su bcad pa mngon par sgrub pa zab pas sangs rgyas bcom ldan ’das rnams kyi byang chub zab ste | de la dge ba’i rtsa ba ma bskyed pa | sdig pa’i grogs pos yongs su zin pa dang | mos pa mi mang ba dag gis mos par mi nus so || 
api ca kāśyapa etāni paṃca bhikṣuśatāni kāśyapasya tathāgatasyārhata samyaksaṃbuddhasya pravacane anyatīrthikaśrrāvakā abhūvan* ste kāśyapasya tathāgatasyāṃtikād upāraṃbhābhiprāyair ekā dharmadeśanā śrrutā śrutvā ceva cittaprasādo labdha āścāryaṃ yāvan madhurapriyabhāṇī khalveyaṃ kāśyapas tathāgato ’rhāṃ samyaksaṃbuddha iti · te tataś cyuta samānā ekacittaprasādena kālagatāḥ trāyastriṃśeṣudeveṣūpapannāḥ teneva hetunā iha mama śāsane pravrajitāḥ tāny etāni kāśyapa paṃca bhikṣuśatāni dṛṣṭigatapraskanditāni imāṃ gaṃbhīrā dharmadeśanā nāvataraṃti nāvagāhaṃti nādhimucyaṃte na śraddadhaṃti · kṛtaṃ punar eṣā mayaṃ dharmadeśanāyā parikarma na bhūyo vinipātagāmino bhaviṣyaṃti · ebhir eva skandhaiḥ parinirvāsyaṃti · 
佛語迦葉。是五百比丘者。乃前迦葉佛時皆作婆羅門道。於迦葉佛所。一返聞經道心意樂喜。即時五百人自說言。迦葉佛所說快。乃爾五百人得是福祐。壽終皆生忉利天上。佛言。五百比丘得是福已。後於我法中作沙門。今聞深經不解不信。佛語迦葉言。是五百比丘持是所聞深經。得不墮惡道。於今世。皆當得阿羅漢般泥洹去。 
此五百比丘。昔迦葉如來興出世時。悉為異學弟子。聞迦葉如來說法時。計著有故。一聞說法心得歡喜。以是因緣。身壞命終生忉利天。從彼命終還生人間。於我法中出家學道。此諸比丘為見所壞。聞是深法不能解了。今始造緣不復生於惡趣之中。此身終已當得滅度。 
又大迦葉。是五百比丘。過去迦葉佛時。為外道弟子。到迦葉佛所欲求長短。聞佛說法得少信心。而自念言。是佛希有快善妙語。以是善心命終之後生忉利天。忉利天終生閻浮提。於我法中而得出家。是諸比丘深著諸見。聞說深法不能信解隨順通達。是諸比丘雖不通達。以聞深法因緣力故。得大利益不生惡道。當於現身得入涅槃。 
復次告言。迦葉。彼五百苾芻於如來教中是外道聲聞。如是迦葉。彼於如來本意執求一事法故。若聞一法決定信受。依教修學如是伽他之法。言教玄妙是故驚怖。又復告言。迦葉。彼比丘意於如來應供正遍知覺。為求一法發心修行。於命終後求生忉利天宮。為如是事於佛教中而求出家。迦葉。此五百苾芻身見未捨。聞甚深法而生驚怖不信不學。此等命終必墮惡趣。
