Note on the transliteration:
The transliteration system of the BP/TLB is based on the Unicode/UTF-8 system. However, there may be difficulties with some of the letters – particularly on PC/Windows-based systems, but not so much on the Mac. We have chosen the most accepted older and traditional systems of transliteration against, e.g, Wylie for Tibetan, since with Unicode it is possible, in Sanskrit and Tibetan, etc., to represent one sound with one letter in almost all the cases (excepting Sanskrit and Tibetan aspirated letters, and Tibetan tsa, tsha, dza). We thus do not use the Wylie system which widely employs two letters for one sound (ng, ny, sh, zh etc.).
 
Important:
We ask you in particular to note the use of the ’ apostrophe and not the ' representing the avagrāha in Sanskrit, and most important the ’a-chuṅ in Tibetan. On the Mac the ’ is Alt-M.

佛語迦葉。沙門何故。正字沙門。有四事字為沙門。何等為四。一者形容被服像如沙門。二者外如沙門內懷媮[女*閻]。三者求索嘩名自貢高。四者行不犯真沙門也。 
復次迦葉。沙門稱說沙門者。云何沙門稱說沙門有四沙門。云何為四。一者色像沙門二者詐威儀沙門。三者名譽沙門。四者真實沙門。 
又大迦葉。謂沙門者。有四種沙門。何謂為四。一者形服沙門。二者威儀欺誑沙門。三者貪求名聞沙門。四者實行沙門。 
佛告迦葉。此有沙門為沙門名。迦葉白言。云何沙門為沙門名。迦葉。此有四種沙門。云何四種。一行色相沙門。二密行虛誑沙門。三求名聞稱讚沙門。四實行沙門。迦葉此是四種沙門。

tatra kāśyapa katamo varṇarūpaliṅgasaṃsthānaśramaṇaḥ iha kāśyapa ih’ ekatya śrramaṇa varṇarūpaliṅgasaṃsthānasamanvāgato bhavati · saṃghāṭīpariveṣṭhito muṇḍaśiraḥ su{{paka}}pātrapāṇaiḥ parigṛhītaḥ sa ca bhavaty apariśuddhakāyakarmasamudācāra apariśuddhavākkarmasamudācāraḥ apariśuddhamanaskarmasamudācārau{ḥ} bhavati· ayukta amuktaḥ adāntaḥ aśāntaḥ aguptaḥ avinītaḥ lubdhaḥ alaso{ḥ} duḥśīlappāpadharmasamācāraḥ ayam ucyate kāśyapa varṇarūpaliṅgasaṃsthānaśramaṇaḥ 
何等為形容被服如沙門者。髠頭剔鬚。著袈裟持鉢。心不正不持戒。但欲作惡喜學外道。是為被服如沙門。 
云何色像沙門。若有沙門成就色像。剔除鬚髮被著法服手持應器。彼身惡行口意惡行。不習調御亦不守護。犯戒作惡貪不精進。是謂迦葉色像沙門。 
何謂形服沙門。有一沙門形服具足被僧伽梨。剃除鬚髮執持應器。而便成就不淨身業不淨口業不淨意業。不善護身慳嫉懈怠破戒為惡。是名形服沙門。 
迦葉白言。云何名行色相沙門。迦葉。此一沙門。雖復剃除鬚髮著佛袈裟受持鉢器色相具足。而身不清淨。口不清淨。意不清淨。不自調伏麁惡不善。廣貪財利命不清淨。得破戒罪法。迦葉。此名行色相沙門。

tatra kāśyapa katamaḥ ācāraguptikuhakaḥ śramaṇaḥ iha kāśyapa ihaikatya śrramaṇaḥ ācāracāritrasaṃpanno bhavati saṃprajānacārī caturbhi īryāpathair lūhānnapānabhojīsaṃtuṣṭaḥ caturbhir āryavaṃśer asaṃsṛṣṭo gṛhasthapravrajitair alpabhāṣyo ’lpamaṃtraḥ te cāsyeryāpathāḥ kuhanalapanatayā kalpitā bhavaṃti · na cittapariśuddhaye · na śamāya nopaśamāya · na damāya · upalaṃbhadṛṣṭikaś ca bhavati · śunyatānupalaṃbhāś ca dharmeṣu śrrutvā prapātasaṃjñī bhavati · śunyatāvādināṃ ca bhikṣuṇām aṃtike aprasādasaṃjñīm utpādayati iyam ucyate kāśyapa ācāraguptikuhakaśrramaṇaḥ 
何因外如沙門內懷媮[女*閻]者。安徐而行。安徐而出安徐而入。外道麁惡於山間草屋為廬。內無信著我著我所。中有因苦直信者反自嫉妬。 
云何詐威儀沙門。若有沙門成就禮節。遊步正智。食知止足。行四聖種。不樂眾聚道俗之會。少言少睡。然彼威儀詐不真實不期淨心。不習止息而有見想。於空便起如坑之想。諸有比丘習行空者。發怨家想。是謂迦葉詐威儀沙門。 
何謂威儀欺誑沙門。有一沙門具足沙門身四威儀。行立坐臥一心安詳。斷諸美味修四聖種。遠離眾會。出家憒閙之眾。言語柔軟。行如是法皆為欺誑。不為善淨而於空法有所見得。於無得法生恐畏心。如臨深想。於空論比丘生怨賊想。是名威儀欺誑沙門。 
迦葉白言云何名密行虛誑沙門。迦葉。此一沙門。雖知行業亦具威儀。喫麁惡飲食。詐歡詐喜。於行住坐臥。恒搆虛誑。又不親近在家出家四聖種族。詐默無言誑賺有情。心無清淨亦無調伏。亦不息念虛妄推度。住著我人之相。若遇空法而生怖畏如登崖險。若見比丘善談空者如遇冤家。迦葉。此說名為密行虛誑沙門。

tatra kāśyapa katamaḥ kīrtiśabdaślokaḥ śrramaṇaḥ iha kāśyapa ihaikatya śrramaṇaḥ pratisaṃkhyāya śīlaṃ rakṣati · kathamān pare jānīyuḥ śīlavatān iti · pratisaṃkhyāya śrutam udgṛhṇīte kathamāṃ pare jānīyur bahuśrruta iti · pratisaṃkhyāyāraṇye prativasati · kathamāṃ pare jānīyur āraṇyaka iti · pratisaṃkhyāya alpecchaḥ saṃtuṣṭaḥ pravivikto viharati · yāvad eva paropadarśanāya na nirvedāya na virāgāya na nirodhāya · nopaśamāya · na saṃbodhaye · na śrrāmaṇyāya · na brāhmaṇyāya · na nirvāṇāya · ayam ucyate kāśyapa kīrtiśabdaślokaśrramaṇa 
何因為求索嘩名者。媮[女*閻]持戒令他人稱譽。媮[女*閻]學經令他人稱譽。媮[女*閻]僻處令人稱譽。不自剋責求度脫。但有媮[女*閻] 
云何名譽沙門。若有沙門奉持禁戒。欲令他人知奉持戒。精進學問欲令他人知精進學。住止山澤中欲令他人知住山澤。少欲知足精勤獨住欲令他知。不厭至死。不求離欲。不樂盡止。不欲求道。息心梵行。不為泥洹。是謂迦葉名譽沙門。 
何謂名聞沙門。有一沙門以現因緣而行持戒。欲令人知自力讀誦。欲令他人知為多聞。自力獨處在於閑靜。欲令人知為阿練若。少欲知足行遠離行。但為人知不以厭離。不為善寂不為得道。不為沙門婆羅門果。不為涅槃。是為名聞沙門。 
迦葉白言。云何名為求名聞稱讚沙門。迦葉。此一沙門。為求名聞稱讚詐行持戒。惑亂他人恃衒多聞要他稱讚。或居山野。或處林間。詐現少欲無貪。假行清淨之行。於其心內無其離欲。無其寂靜無其息慮。無證菩提亦不為沙門。亦不為婆羅門。亦不為涅槃。而求稱讚名聞。迦葉。此名求名聞稱讚沙門。

tatra kāśyapa katamo bhūtapratipattiḥ śramaṇaḥ yaḥ kāśyapa bhikṣur anarthiko bhavati kāyena ca jīvitenāpi · kaḥ punar vvādo lābhasatkāraśloke · śunyatā ānimittā apraṇihitāś ca dharmāṃ śrrutvā āptamano bhavati · tathatvatāyāṃ pratipaṃno nirvāṇe cāpy anarthikā brahmacaryaṃ carati · kaḥ punar vādas traidhātukābhinandanatayā śunyatādṛṣṭyāpy anarthiko bhavati · kaḥ punar vāda ātmasatvajīvapauṣapudgaladṛṣṭyā · dharmapratisaraṇaś ca bhavati · kleśānāṃ ca adhyātmavimokṣa margati · na bahirdhā dhāvati · atyaṃtapariśuddhaś ca prakṛtyā sarvadharmā asaṃkliṣṭān paśyati · ātmadvīpaś ca bhavaty ananyadvīpaḥ dharmato ’pi tathāgataṃ na samanupaśyati kaḥ punar vāda rūpakāyena · virāgato ’pi dharmaṃ nābhiniviśate kaḥ punar vāda uta vākpathodāharaṇena · asaṃskṛtam api cāryasaṃghaṃ na vikalpayati · kaḥ punar vādo gaṇasaṃnipātataḥ nāpi kasyacid dharmasya prarhāṇāyābhiyukto bhavati na bhāvanā yair na sākṣīkkriyāya · na saṃsāre virohati · na nirvāṇam abhinandati· na mokṣaṃ paryeṣate · na bandhaṃ · prakṛtiparinirvṛtā ca sarvadharmān viditvā na saṃsarati na parinirvāyati · ayam ucyate kāśyapa bhūtapratipattiḥ śramaṇaḥ bhūtapratipattyā śrrāmaṇyā yogaḥ karaṇīyo na nāmahetena bhavitavyo ime kāśyapa catvāra śrramaṇā · 
何等為行不犯真沙門。不惜壽命損身。何況索歸遺供養者。若有比丘守空行。常勸樂追。及悉見諸法淨潔本無瑕穢。自作黠明不從他人持黠明。於佛法亦不著。何況常著色。亦無結者亦無脫者。本無不見泥洹。亦無死生亦無泥洹。是為真沙門。佛語迦葉。至誠沙門常當作是念。當効真沙門。莫効嘩名諛訑沙門也。 
云何為真實沙門。若有沙門不為身命。況復貪財著於名譽。樂聽空無相無願之法。聞則歡喜修行如法。不為涅槃而修梵行。況為三界不作空見。況見我人壽命依法求道。離結解脫不求外道。觀諸法性皆悉究竟清淨無穢。而自照察不由於他。如法者。不見如來況有色身。不見無欲法況有文飾。不想無為況有眾德。不習斷法不學修法。不住生死不樂涅槃。不求解脫亦不求縛。知一切法究竟清淨不生不滅。是謂迦葉真實沙門。是故迦葉。當學真實沙門。莫習名譽沙門。 
復次迦葉。何謂實行沙門。有一沙門。不貪身命。何況利養。聞諸法空無相無願。心達隨順如所說行。不為涅槃而修梵行。何況三界。尚不樂起空無我見。何況我見眾生人見。離依止法而求解脫一切煩惱。見一切諸法本來無垢畢竟清淨。而自依止亦不依他。以正法身尚不見佛。何況形色。以空遠離尚不見法。何況貪著音聲言說。以無為法尚不見僧。何況當見有和合眾。而於諸法無所斷除無所修行。不生生死不著涅槃。知一切法本來寂滅。不見有縛不求解脫。是名實行沙門。如是迦葉。汝等當習實行沙門法。莫為名字所壞。 
迦葉白言。云何名實行沙門。迦葉此一沙門。不為身命而行外事。亦不言論名聞利養。唯行空無相無願。若聞一切法已。正意思惟涅槃實際。恒修梵行不求世報。亦不論量三界喜樂之事。唯見性空不得事法。亦不議論我人眾生壽者及補特伽羅。見正法位離諸虛妄。於解脫道斷諸煩惱。達一切法自性清淨。內外不著。無集無散。於彼法身如來明了通達。無其見取。亦不言論色身離欲。亦不見色相。亦不見三業造作。亦不執凡聖之眾法無所有。斷諸分別自性凝然。不得輪迴不得涅槃。無縛無解無來無去。知一切法寂靜湛然。迦葉。此說名為實行沙門。作相應行非求名聞故。我今於此而說頌曰。

yo kāyavākcittamaner aśuddho adānt’ agupto avinīta lubdho
muṇḍaḥ śiraś cīvarapātrapāṇī saṃsthānaliṅgā śrramaṇeṣu vukto 1
ācāracaryāpi samanvito ’pi rūkṣān na bhojī kuhanādisevī
caturāryavaṃśehi samanvito ’pi saṃsarga dūrāt parivarjayaṃto 2
te cāsya sarve na damāya bhonti na śāntaye nāpi ca nirvidāya ·
śūnyānimitteṣu prapātasaṃjñī ācāraguptiḥ kuhako dvitīyo{ḥ} 3
dhutā guṇā śīla śrrutaṃ samādhiḥ parasya visvāpanahetu kurvati ·
na śāntaye nāpi ca nirvidāya kīrtīyaślokaśrramaṇos tṛtīya · 4
kāyena yo arthika jīvitena vā yo lābhasatkāraparāmukhaś ca
vimokṣa utpādamukhaṃ ca śrrutvā anarthikā sarvabhavad gatīṣu · 5
atyaṃtaśunyāś ca parīkṣya dharmān na nirvṛtiṃ paśyati nāpy anirvṛtiṃ ·
virāgato dharmam avekṣate sadā asaṃskṛtaṃ dharmam anitya nirvṛtaḥ 6 
 
 
 
所有身口意 三業不清淨
貪愛不調伏 麁惡行不密
圓頂服三衣 執持於應器
佛說此沙門 恒行於色相
雖然依彼行 虛誑而不實
詐現四威儀 示同於聖者
遠離和合處 恒餐麁惡食
無彼清淨行 密行於虛誑
或彼為求名 要他行稱讚
詐修於戒定 示衒行頭陀
內意不調伏 誑賺於信施
不行離欲善 亦不息攀緣
見說法相空 怖同登山險
或居山野間 而無真實意
佛說此沙門 為求名聞故
若彼實行者 不為於身命
妄求名利養 亦無求快樂
唯修正解脫 救拔諸惡趣
雖知深法空 不得於寂靜
亦無非寂靜 不住於涅槃
不得於生死 不著於聖人
不捨於凡夫 本自無所來
今亦無所去 一切法寂然
佛說於此人 是名實行者

tadyathāpi nāma kāśyapa daridrapuruṣasya samṛddhakośa iti nāmadheyaṃ bhavet* tat kiṃ manyase kāśyapa anurūpaṃ tasya daridrapuruṣasya tan nāmadheyaṃ bhavet* āha no hīdaṃ bhadaṃta bhagavan* bhagavān āha · evam eva kāśyapa ye te śramaṇabrāhmaṇā ity ucyaṃte · na ca śramaṇabrāhmaṇasamanvāgatā bhavaṃti · tān ahaṃ daridrapuruṣān iti vadāmi · tatredam ucyate ·
yathā daridrasya bhaveta nāmaṃ samṛddhakośaṃbhi na tac ca śobhate ·
śrāmaṇyahīna śramaṇo na śobhate daridra āḍhyeti va ucyamānaḥ 
譬如貧人號名大富。但得富名無所有也。佛語迦葉。是人應得為有是字不。迦葉言不也。佛言如是。迦葉。雖有沙門字。不行沙門法也。亦如貧人自稱大富。 
譬如貧人外有富名。於意云何。彼名有實不。答曰。不也世尊。如是迦葉。有沙門名無沙門德。我說此人是為極貧。 
迦葉。譬如貧窮賤人假富貴名。於意云何。稱此名不。不也世尊。如是迦葉。但名沙門婆羅門。而無沙門婆羅門實功德行。亦如貧人為名所壞。 
佛告迦葉。譬如貧人家無財利。自發其言告眾人曰。我家之內有大庫藏財物盈滿。迦葉。於意云何。此貧人言是事實不。迦葉白言。不也世尊。佛言。迦葉亦復如是。彼沙門婆羅門自無戒德而復發言。我身具大德業。此言不實是事難信。我今於此而說頌曰。
譬如貧窮人 言自有庫藏
盈滿七珍財 彼語不相應
沙門婆羅門 虛妄亦如是
三業無清淨 自言具戒德

tadyathāpi nāma kāśyapa kaścid eva puruṣo mahatā udakārṇavenohyamānaḥ tṛṣayā kālaṃ kuryāt* evam eva kāśyapa ih’ ekatye śrramaṇabrāhmaṇo bahūn dharmān paryāpnuvaṃti na rāgatṛṣṇān vinodayaṃti · na dveṣatṛṣṇā na mohatṛṣṇā śaknuvaṃti vinodayituṃ · te mahatā dharmārṇavenohyamānā kleśatṛṣāyā kālagatā durgatigāmino bhavaṃti · tatredam ucyate 2
yathā manuṣyo udakārṇavena uhyaṃti tṛṣṇāya kareya kālam*
tathā paṭhaṃtā bahudharmatṛṣṇayā dharmārṇavasthāmi vrajaṃty apāyaṃ ·· 
譬如人為水所沒溺反渴欲死。沙門如是多諷經。高才不去情欲。於情欲中渴欲死。坐入泥犁禽獸薜荔中。 
譬如有人大水所漂渴乏而死。如是迦葉。有沙門梵志習學多法。而不能除婬怒癡渴。彼為法水所漂結渴而死。生惡趣中亦復如是。 
譬如有人漂沒大水渴乏而死。如是迦葉。有諸沙門多讀誦經。而不能止貪恚癡渴。法水漂沒煩惱渴死墮諸惡道。 
佛告迦葉。譬如有人入大水內而不專心。恣意戲水不覺溺死。迦葉。亦復如是。此沙門婆羅門多知樂法。入大法海不能制心。好行貪瞋癡。被煩惱貪引生惡趣。我今於此而說頌曰。
譬如戲水人 入於大水內
不自用其心 被水溺其命
沙門婆羅門 貪入大法海
恣行貪瞋癡 沈墜於惡趣

tadyathāpi nāma kāśyapa vaidyo oṣadhabhāraṃ gṛhītvā anuvicaret* tasya kaścid eva vyādhi utpadyeta na ca taṃ vyādhi śaknuyā cikitsituṃ · evam eva kāśyapa bahuśrrutasya kleśavyādhi draṣṭavyā yas tena śrrutena na śaknoti ātmanaḥ kleśavyādhi cikitsituṃ · nirarthakaṃ tasya tac chrutaṃ bhaviṣyati · tatredam ucyate 3
yatheva vaidy’ auṣadharbhrastrasaṃsthe paribhrameta nikhilaṃhi loke ·
utpanna vyādhin na nivartaye ca nirarthakaṃ tasya bhaveta taṃ hi·
bhikṣus tathā śīlaguṇerr upetaḥ śrrutena yukto ’pi na ca {ś}cikitset*
ayoniśa kleśasamutthitā rujā vṛthā śramas tasya śrrutābhiyogaḥ 
譬如醫滿一具器藥。不能自愈其病。雖多諷經而不持戒。 
譬如醫師持種種藥療他人病而不自治。如是迦葉。有沙門梵志。多諷誦法而不自除婬怒癡病。亦復如是。 
譬如藥師持藥囊行而自身病不能療治。多聞之人有煩惱病亦復如是。雖有多聞不止煩惱不能自利。 
佛告迦葉。譬如醫人修合湯藥將往四方欲療眾病。忽自得疾而不能救。迦葉。如是若彼比丘修彼多聞。欲化有情忽爾之間。自起煩惱而不能伏。我今於此而說頌曰。
譬如良醫人 修合諸湯藥
持往於四方 治彼眾生病
自忽有疾苦 不能自醫療
比丘亦如是 修學於多聞
欲行於化導 自忽煩惱生
不能善制止 虛施於辛苦

tadyathāpi nāma kāśyapa · glānaḥ puruṣo rājārhan bheṣajyam upayujyāsaṃvareṇa kālaṃ kuryāt* evam eva kāśyapa bahuśrutasya kleśavyādhiṃ draṣṭavyāḥ yas tenāsaṃvareṇa kālaṃ karoti · yo rājārhāṃ bhaiṣajyāṃ paryāpunitvā asaṃvareṇa apāya gāmī bhavati · tatredam ucyate 4
yathāpi rājārhaṃ pītva bheṣajaṃ vrajen naro ’saṃvarato nipātaṃ ·
bahuśrrutasy’ eṣa tu kleśavyādhir yo ’saṃvareṇeha karoti kālam* 
譬如人病得王家藥。不自護坐死。雖多諷經而不持戒如是。 
譬如病人服王妙藥。不自將節而致終沒。如是迦葉。多有沙門梵志。行不如法起諸結病。終生惡趣亦復如是。 
譬如有人服王貴藥。不能將適為藥所害。多聞之人有煩惱病亦復如是。得好法藥不能修善自害慧根。 
佛告迦葉。譬如有人身有重病。服彼上好名藥不免命終。迦葉。如是若彼有情具煩惱病。而欲多聞修行亦不免墜墮。我今於此而說頌曰。
譬如重病人 久患而不差
設服於良藥 終不免無常
眾生亦如是 恒染煩惱病
設樂修多聞 不免於墜墮
