Nå, familjen er jo dog samfundets kerne. Et godt hjem, hæderlige og trofaste venner, en liden tætsluttet kreds, hvor ingen forstyrrende elementer kaster sin skygge ind –
(Fuldmægtig Krap kommer med breve og aviser fra højre.)

BERNICK.
Die Familie ist ja doch der Kern der Gesellschaft. Ein gutes Heim, geachtete und treue Freunde, ein kleiner, geschlossener Kreis, in den keine störenden Elemente ihren Schatten werfen –
Krap kommt mit Briefen und Zeitungen von rechts.

BERNICK.
Well, the family is the kernel of society. A good home, honoured and trusty friends, a little snug family circle where no disturbing elements can cast their shadow--
(KRAP comes in from the right, bringing letters and papers.)

博尼克
家庭是社会的核心。一个人要是有个好家庭，有几个可靠的正经朋友，亲亲密密地过日子，没有什么扫兴的事情--
(克拉普拿着许多信札和文件从右边进来。)

KRAP.

KRAP.
The foreign mail, Mr. Bernick--and a telegram from New York.

博尼克先生，这是国外来的邮件--还有纽约来的一封电报。

KONSUL BERNICK
(tager det).
Ah, fra rederiet for „Indian Girl“.

BERNICK
nimmt es.
Ah! von der Reederei des »Indian Girl«.

BERNICK
(taking the telegram).
Ah--from the owners of the “Indian Girl”.

(接过电报一看)
哦，是“印第安少女”号老板打来的。

GROSSERER RUMMEL.
Så posten er kommen? Ja, så må jeg anbefale mig.

RUMMEL.
So? Die Post ist gekommen? Dann muß ich mich empfehlen.

RUMMEL.
Is the mail in? Oh, then you must excuse me.

邮件到了?对不起，那么我要失陪了。

KØBMAND VIGELAND.
Ja, jeg ligeså.

VIGELAND.
Ja, ich auch.

VIGELAND.
And me too.

KØBMAND SANDSTAD.
Farvel, herr konsul.

SANDSTADT.
Adieu, Herr Konsul!

SANDSTAD.
Good day, Mr. Bernick.

KONSUL BERNICK.
Farvel, farvel, mine herrer. Og husk altså, vi har møde i eftermiddag klokken fem.

BERNICK.
Adieu, adieu, meine Herren! Vergessen Sie ja nicht, daß wir heute nachmittag fünf Uhr eine Sitzung haben.

BERNICK.
Good day, good day, gentlemen. And remember, we have a meeting this afternoon at five o’clock.

博尼克
诸位先生，再见，再见。别忘了今天下午五点咱们有会。

DE TRE HERRER.
Ja; ja vel; forstår sig.
(de går ud til højre.)

DIE DREI HERREN.
Bewahre, – gewiß nicht!
Sie gehen rechts ab.

THE THREE MEN.
Yes--quite so--of course.
(They go out to the right.)

(三人一同从右边出去。)

KONSUL BERNICK
(der har læst telegrammet)
Nej, dette er virkelig ægte amerikansk! Rentud oprørende –

Nein, das ist wirklich echt amerikanisch! Geradezu empörend –

BERNICK
(who has read the telegram).
This is thoroughly American! Absolutely shocking!
