Er vejret sligt, med slag og skrald,
så lyser provsten messefald! 
A THIRD.
With waves so wild and wind so rough.
The Dean would put the service off. 
EIN DRITTER.
Solang’ der Sturm so drohend spricht,
Enthebt der Propst Dich Deiner Pflicht! 
BRAND.
En syndersjæl, sin domsstund nær,
ej venter efter vind og vejr!
(går ned i en båd og løser sejlet.)
I vover båden? 
BRAND.
A sinful soul that nears its end
Waits not until the weather mend!
[Goes down to a bout and looses the sail.]
You’ll risk the boat? 
BRAND.
Ein Sünder, dessen Stunde schlägt,
Verzieht nicht, bis ein Sturm sich legt!
(Springt in ein Boot und zieht das Segel auf.)
Ihr wagt das Schiff? 
EJEREN.
Ja; men bliv! 
THE OWNER.
I will; but stay! 
DER EIGENTÜMER.
Das wohl; – doch bleib! 
BRAND.
Godt; kom nu den, som vover liv! 
BRAND.
Now, who will risk his l i f e, I say? 
BRAND.
Wohlan! Wer wagt nun seinen Leib? 
EN MAND.
Jeg går ej med. 
A MAN.
I’ll not go with him. 
EIN MANN.
Ich nicht. 
EN ANDEN.
Og ikke jeg! 
ANOTHER.
No, nor I. 
EIN ANDERER.
Ich auch nicht. Bei dem Wehn! 
FLERE.
Det var den lige dødsens vej! 
SEVERAL.
It were just putting out to die! 
MEHRERE.
Das hieß’ blind ins Verderben gehn! 
BRAND.
Jer Gud hjalp ingen over fjord;
men husk, at min er med ombord! 
BRAND.
Your God helps none across the fjord;
Remember, though, that mine’s on board! 
BRAND.
Ja, Euer Gott hülf’ keinem fort,
Doch meiner, wißt, ist mit an Bord! 
KVINDEN
(vrider hænderne):
Han ufrelst dør! 
THE WOMAN.
[Wringing her hands.]
He’ll die unsaved! 
DAS WEIB
(ringt die Hände.)
Er stirbt! 
BRAND
(råber fra båden):
Én mand er nok
til hjælp med øsekar og fok!
Kom, en af jer, som nylig gav!
Giv, mænd, giv indtil død og grav! 
BRAND.
[Calling from the boat.]
O n e will avail
To bail the leakage, shift the sail;
Come, one of you that lately gave;
Give now to death and to the grave! 
BRAND
(ruft vom Boote aus:)
Wenn sich nur einer stellt,
Der schöpft und vorn am Fock sich hält!
Hier gab doch grad’ manch wackrer Mann; –
Gebt mehr noch! Gebt Euch selbst noch dran!
