Den store stygge fugl
med kammen fladt på panden strøgen,
med rand om øjet rød og gul! 
GERD.
The laidly fowl with crest
Thwart on its sloping brow depress’d,
And red-and-yellow-circled eye.

Den Habicht voller Wut,
Den Schopf flach in die Stirn gestrichen,
Die Augenränder rot wie Blut! 
BRAND.
Hvor går din vej?

Wo geht Dein Weg?

Til kirke.

BRAND.

Da kan vi to jo følge slå.

Vi to? Nej, jeg skal opad her.

[Pointing upward.]
We? But the way I’m bound is thither.

Wir? Nein, ich muß hier aufwärts. 
BRAND
(peger nedover).
Men der er kirken jo! 
BRAND.
[Pointing downward.]
But yonder is the church, you know! 
BRAND
(weist nach unten.)
Ja, –
Die Kirche liegt doch da! 
GERD
(ser hånligt smilende på ham og peger ned).
Den der? 
GERD.
[Pointing downward with a scornful smile.]
That yonder? 
GERD
(sieht ihn höhnisch lächelnd an und weist hinab.)
Wo? Da? 
BRAND.
Ja visst; kom med. 
BRAND.
Truly; come with me. 
BRAND.
Nun freilich; komm nur! 
GERD.
Nej; der er stygt! 
GERD.
No; yon is ugly. 
GERD.
Nein, mir graut! 
BRAND.
Stygt? Hvorfor? 
BRAND.
Ugly? Why? 
BRAND.
Dir graut? Wovor?
