si que la lune, aucune foiz luisant o ses plaines cornes contremise a toutes les flambes du solail, repoingne et occurcisse les estoiles meneurs, et que elle, aucune foiz pale o ses cornes oscures quant est au plus pres du solail, perde ses clartéz,

and that the eve-sterre Hesperus, whiche that in the firste tyme of the night bringeth forth hir colde arysinges, cometh eft ayein hir used cours, and is pale by the morwe at the rysing of the sonne, and is thanne cleped Lucifer.

Tu restrainz le jour par plus brieve demeure en temps froit de yver qui fait cheoir les feueilles. Tu devises et eslongnes les ineles heures de la nuit quant li chaus estéz est venus. 
Thou restreinest the day by shorter dwelling, in the tyme of colde winter that maketh the leves to falle. Thou dividest the swifte tydes of the night, whan the hote somer is comen.  
thou, by the Cold of Lefe falne shade
straightist thy Light with shortar abode:
Thou whan the fervent sommar comes,
Easy nights houres deuidest. 
Tua vis varium temperat annum
Ut quas Boreae spiritus aufert
Revehat mites Zephyrus frondes
Quaeque Arcturus semina vidit

Vus ki guvernez si bien
Le ciel l’amunt e tute rien,
Mesestance adrescez une ;
Mès ne suffrez ke Fortune
Pusse enginner bone gent
Par sun faus blandiement.
Hom est vostre criature ;
Ne soffrez k’il eit leidure.
Sire, pernez cure e garde
Ke Fortune fei ne garde.
Sun quer change plus sovent
Ke cochez ki turne al vent.
Primes fist tut mon desir,
Or me fet de feim morir.
Or vois nu péz e en lange,

This corresponds to all the rest of the canto.

Ta puissance atrempe le divers an si que Zephirus, li debonnairez vens, raport en printemps les feueilles que li vent de bise tolt1 en autompne et que les semences que Arcturus vit deviengnent haus bles que Sirius eschaufe et seche. 
Thy might atempreth the variaunts sesons of the yere ; so that Zephirus the deboneir wind bringeth ayein, in the first somer sesoun, the leves that the wind that highte Boreas hath reft awey in autumpne, that is to seyn, in the laste ende of somer ; and the sedes that the sterre that highte Arcturus saw, ben waxen heye cornes whan the sterre Sirius eschaufeth hem.

Le ciel l’amunt e tute rien,
Mesestance adrescez une;

Tu gouverneur, gouvernanz toutez chosez par certain terme, refusez seulement a gouverner et a refrener par maniere bonne et digne les fez des hommes. 
O thou governour, governinge alle thinges by certein ende, why refusestow only to governe the werkes of men by dewe manere ? 
Al giding with assured end,
Mans workes alone thou dost dispice
O gidar by right desart from meane to kipe. 
Nam cur tantas lubrica versat
Fortuna vices? Premit insontes
Debita sceleri noxia poena,
At perversi resident celso
Mores solio sanctaque calcant
Iniusta vice colla nocentes.

4 Mès nes suffrez ke Fortune
Pusse enginner bone gent
Par sun faus blandiement.

Car pour quoy sueffres tu que fortune escoulouriable tourne si grans entrechangemens de chosez ? Je voy que paine coupable, qui devroit punir les felons homes, punist les innocens et li mauvais, qui les meurs ont pervers, sieent en haulte chaere et li nuisant marchent a tort seur les colz des sains hommes. 
Why suffrest thou that slydinge fortune torneth so grete entre-chaunginges of thinges, so that anoyous peyne, that sholde dewelypunisshe felouns, punissheth innocents ? And folk of wikkede maneres sitten in heye chayres, and anoyinge folk treden, and that unrightfully, on the nekkes of holy men ?  
for why so many slipar fortune
turnes doth make? oppressing fautles
dew apine for wicked mete,
but in hy Seatz the wicked factz abide,
And wicked stamps on holy necks with uniust turne.

Clara tenebris iustusque tulit
Crimen iniqui.

And vertu clershyninge naturelly is hid in derke derkenesses, and the rightful man bereth the blame and the peyne of the feloun. 
And Cleare vertu dimmed
with thick blackenis Lurketh,
And iust man the wickeds crime doth beare.

Fraus mendaci compta colore.

10 Tu gouverneur, reprain et refraingne les ravissables floz et ferme les terres estables par celle aliance par quoy tu gouvernez le ciel grant sans mesure. » 
Thou governour, withdraw and restreyne the ravisshinge flodes, and fastne and ferme thise erthes stable with thilke bonde, with whiche thou governest the hevene that is so large.’

And with what boundz the great heauen thou gidest the stable erthe do stedy.
