ونحن لم نُقْدِم على فنّ الأدب - وهو في الوقت الحاضر فنّ لا يورث صاحبه غير الفاقة والشقاء - إلا ونحن مدفوعون بذاك الأمل ؛

wa-naḥnu lam nuqdim ʕalà fannⁱ ’l-ʔadab – wa-huwa fī ’l-waqtⁱ ’l-ḥāḍir fann^un lā yūriṯ^u ṣāḥiba-hū ġayr^a ’l-fāqaẗ wa’l-šaqāʔ – ʔillā wa-naḥnu madfūʕūn^a bi-ḏāka ’l-ʔamal;

And we do not adventure into the art of literature – which currently is an art that earns its masters nothing but poverty and misery – unless driven by that hope,
