Ekaṃ samayaṃ Bhagavā Sāvatthiyaṃ viharati Jetavane Anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.
Atha kho Bhagavato rahogatassa patissallīnassa evaṃ cetaso parivitakko udapādi: Paripakkā kho Rāhulassa vimutti paripācaniyā dhammā; yannūnāhaṃ Rāhulaṃ uttariṃ āsavānaṃ khaye vineyyan ti.
Atha kho Bhagavā pubbaṇhasamayaṃ nivāsetvā pattacīvaraṃ ādāya Sāvatthiṃ piṇḍāya pāvisi.
Sāvatthiyaṃ piṇḍāya caritvā pacchābhattaṃ piṇḍapātapaṭikkanto āyasmantaṃ Rāhulaṃ āmantesi: Gaṇhāhi, Rāhula, nisīdanaṃ, yen’ Andhavanaṃ ten’ upasaṃkamissāma (278) divāvihārāyāti.
Evaṃ bhante ti kho āyasmā Rāhulo Bhagavato paṭissutvā nisīdanaṃ ādāya Bhagavantaṃ piṭṭhito piṭṭhito anubandhi.
Tena kho pana samayena anekāni devatāsahassāni Bhagavantaṃ anubandhāni honti: Ajja Bhagavā āyasmantaṃ Rāhulaṃ uttariṃ āsavānaṃ khaye vinessatīti.
Atha kho Bhagavā Andhavanaṃ ajjhogahetvā aññatarasmiṃ rukkhamūle paññatte āsane nisīdi.
Āyasmā pi kho Rāhulo Bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi.
Ekamantaṃ nisinnaṃ kho āyasmantaṃ Rāhulaṃ Bhagavā etad avoca: Taṃ kiṃ maññasi, Rāhula?
Cakkhuṃ niccaṃ vā aniccaṃ vā ti?
Yaṃ panāniccaṃ, dukkhaṃ vā taṃ sukhaṃ vā ti?
Yaṃ panāniccaṃ dukkhaṃ vipariṇāmadhammaṃ, kallan nu taṃ samanupassituṃ: Etaṃ mama, eso 'ham asmi, eso me attā ti?
Rūpā niccā vā aniccā vā ti?
Yaṃ panāniccaṃ, dukkhaṃ vā taṃ sukhaṃ vā ti?
Yaṃ panāniccaṃ dukkhaṃ vipariṇāmadhammaṃ, kallan nu taṃ samanupassituṃ: Etaṃ mama, eso 'ham asmi, eso me attā ti?
Cakkhuviññāṇaṃ niccaṃ vā aniccaṃ vā ti?
Yam panāniccaṃ, dukkhaṃ vā taṃ sukhaṃ vā ti?
Yam panāniccaṃ dukkhaṃ vipariṇāmadhammaṃ . . . attā ti?
Cakkhusamphasso nicco vā anicco vā ti?
-- Anicco, bhante . . . {No} h’ etaṃ, bhante.
Yaṃ idaṃ cakkhusamphassapaccayā uppajjati vedanāgataṃ saññāgataṃ saṃkhāragataṃ viññāṇagataṃ, tam pi niccaṃ vā aniccaṃ vā ti?
-- Aniccaṃ, bhante . . . No h’ etaṃ, bhante.
Sotaṃ niccaṃ vā aniccaṃ va ti?
-- Aniccaṃ, bhante --pe--.
Ghānaṃ niccaṃ vā aniccaṃ vā ti?
Jivhā niccā vā aniccā vā ti?
Kāyo nicco vā anicco vā ti?
Mano nicco vā anicco vā ti?
Yam panāniccaṃ . . . No h’ etaṃ, bhante.
Dhammā niccā vā aniccā vā ti?
-- Aniccā, bhante . . . No h’ etaṃ, bhante.
Manoviññāṇaṃ niccaṃ vā aniccaṃ vā ti?
-- Aniccaṃ, bhante . . . No h’ etaṃ, bhante.
Manosamphasso nicco vā anicco vā ti?
-- Anicco, bhante . . . No h’ etaṃ bhante.
Yam p’ idaṃ manosamphassapaccayā uppajjati vedanāgataṃ saññāgataṃ saṃkhāragataṃ viññāṇagataṃ, tam pi niccaṃ vā aniccaṃ vā ti?
Evaṃ passaṃ, Rāhula, sutavā ariyasāvako cakkhusmiṃ nibbindati rūpesu nibbindati cakkhuviññāṇe nibbindati cakkhusamphasse nibbindati; yam p’ idaṃ cakkhusamphassapaccayā uppajjati vedanāgataṃ saññāgataṃ saṃkhāragataṃ viññāṇagataṃ, tasmim pi nibbindati.
Sotasmiṃ nibbindati, saddesu nibbindati, ghānasmiṃ nibbindati, gandhesu nibbindati, jivhāya nibbindati, rasesu nibbindati, kāyasmiṃ nibbindati, phoṭṭhabbesu nibbindati, manasmiṃ nibbindati, dhammesu nibbindati, manoviññāṇe nibbindati, manosamphasse nibbindati.
Yam p’ idaṃ manosamphassa-(280)paccayā uppajjati vedanāgataṃ saññāgataṃ saṃkhāragataṃ viññāṇagataṃ, tasmiṃ pi nibbindati, nibbindaṃ virajjati, virāgā vimuccati, vimuttasmiṃ vimuttam iti ñāṇaṃ hoti:
Khīṇā jāti, vusitaṃ brahmacariyaṃ, kataṃ karaṇīyaṃ, nāparaṃ itthattāyāti pajānātīti.
Āyasmā {Rāhulo} Bhagavato bhāsitaṃ abhinandīti.
Imasmiṃ kho pana veyyākaraṇasmiṃ bhaññamāne, āyasmato Rāhulassa anupādāya āsavehi cittaṃ vimucci.
Tāsañ c’ anekānaṃ devatāsahassānaṃ virajaṃ vītamalaṃ dhammacakkhuṃ udapādi: Yaṃ kiñci samudayadhammaṃ, sabban taṃ nirodhadhamman ti.
