Ἐν αὐτῇ δὲ τῇ τῶν γενεθλίων τοῦ παιδὸς ἑορτῇ συνῆλθον πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα ἐξ ἐπιλογῆς ἄνδρες ὡσεὶ πεντηκονταπέντε, περὶ τὴν ἀστροθεάμονα τῶν Χαλδαίων ἐσχολακότες σοφίαν.  καὶ τούτους ἐγγυτάτω παραστησάμενος ὁ βασιλεὺς ἀνηρώτα ἐξειπεῖν ἕκαστον τί μέλλει ἔσεσθαι τὸ γεννηθὲν αὐτῷ παιδίον.  οἱ δέ, πολλὰ διασκεψάμενοι, ἔλεγον μέγαν αὐτὸν ἔσεσθαι ἔν τε πλούτῳ καὶ δυναστείᾳ, καὶ ὑπερβάλλειν πάντας τοὺς πρὸ αὐτοῦ βεβασιλευκότας. 
In ipso autem natalitiorum filii solemni die, delecti viri circiter quinquaginta, qui in ea Chaldaeorum sapientia, quae in conspiciendis notandisque sideribus versatur, studium atque operam collocarent, ad regem convenerunt.  Quos cum rex propius ad se accedere jussisset, de singulis percunctabatur quidnam puer in lucem editus futurus esset.  Illi autem longa consideratione habita, futurum dicebant ut opibus ac potentia floreret, atque omnes qui regnum ante ipsum obtinuissent superaret. 
Now on his son’s birth-day feast there came unto the king some five and fifty chosen men, schooled in the star-lore of the Chaldaeans.  These the king called into his presence, and asked them, severally, to tell him the future of the new-born babe.  After long counsel held, they said that he should be mighty in riches and power, and should surpass all that had reigned before him. 
En þeir meistarar er kunnu þann visdom er kalaðer ero stiornnu meistarar. þeir kunnu marga luti vorðna firir at segia. þeir varo .v. oc fimtigir.  Konongr spurði þa a sina sunndrung hvern. til hverss þesse sveinn mynddi vera eða hvat manne hann myndi verða.  þeir svaraðu sva flester aller er þeir rannzakaðu bœkr sinar oc sins kunnastu. at sia skylldi verða hinn meste maðr oc hinn rikazte konongr er verit hevir i þessom lanndum. fremre oc frægre en engi var aðr i hans ætt. 
Men de Mestere, der forstaa den Videnskab, at de kaldes Stjernekyndige, kunne forudsige mange tilkommende Ting. Af dem vare der fem og femti.  Kongen spurgte dem hver især, hvortil denne Dreng var bestemt, eller hvad for Mand han vilde blive.  De svarede saa næsten alle, da de ransagede sine Böger og sin Videnskab, at han skulde blive den (13,1) störste Mand og den mægtigste Konge som havde været i de Lande, mere udmærket og berömt end Nogen var för i hans Slægt. 
     
εἷς δὲ τῶν ἀστρολόγων, ὁ τῶν σὺν αὐτῷ πάντων διαφορώτατος, εἶπεν ὡς, 
Unus vero astrologus, qui socios omnes suos eruditione anteibat, his verbis usus est: 
But one of the astrologers, the most learned of all his fellows, spake thus: 
Einn af þeim er vitraztr var meistaranna oc mest var kunnande tok sva til orðz. 
En af dem, som var den viseste af Mestrene og havde de fleste Indsigter, tog saaledes til Orde. 
 
Ἐξ ὧν με διδάσκουσιν ὁ τῶν ἀστέρων δρόμοι, ὦ βασιλεῦ, ἡ προκοπὴ τοῦ νυνὶ γεννηθέντος σοι παιδὸς οὐκ ἐν τῇ σῇ ἔσται βασιλείᾳ, ἀλλ' ἐν ἑτέρᾳ κρείττονι καὶ ἀσυγκρίτως ὑπερβαλλούσῃ.  δοκῶ δὲ καὶ τῆς παρὰ σοῦ διωκομένης αὐτὸν ἐπιλαβέσθαι τῶν Χριστιανῶν θρησκείας, καὶ οὐκ ἔγωγε οἶμαι τοῦ σκοποῦ ἐκεῖνον καὶ τῆς ἐλπίδος ψευσθήσεσθαι. 
Quantum ex siderum cursu addiscere possum, (452c,1) o rex, filii qui nunc ex te ortus est amplitudo atque profectus non in tuo regno erit, sed in altero praestantiore, atque incomparabiliter excellentiore.  Atque ipsum Christianorum quoque religionem quam tu insectaris arrepturum existimo, nec eum ab hoc scopo ac spe aberraturum puto. 
“From that which I learn from the courses of the stars, O king, the advancement of the child, now born unto thee, will not be in thy kingdom, but in another, a better and a greater one beyond compare.  Methinketh also that he will embrace the Christian religion, which thou persecutest, and I trow that he will not be disappointed of his aim and hope.” 
Herra konongr sagðe hann. ef sva er sem mer segir minn visdomr. þa er þesse sveinn til mykyls visdoms komenn oc rikiss. en þo eigi til þess rikiss er þu styrir. helldr til annars rikis myklu meira oc mætara en þetta.  þat ætla ec at hann (8,1) man velia þa tru cristinna manna er þu hatar. oc hana hava oc ælska með allum matt oo megni. oc eigi ætla ec at honom verðe sin von at hegoma. 
“Herre Konge!” sagde han, “dersom det forholder sig saa, som min Videnskab siger mig, da er denne Dreng bestemt til stor Visdom og et stort Rige, men dog ikke til det Rige, som du styrer, men til et andet Rige, langt större og herligere end dette.  Jeg formoder, at han vil vælge den de christne Mænds Tro, som du hader, og bevare og elske den med al sin Kraft og Styrke, og jeg tror ei, at hans Haab bliver til Tant.” 
   
ταῦτα μὲν εἶπεν ὁ ἀστρολόγος, ὥσπερ ὁ πάλαι Βαλαάμ, οὐ τῆς ἀστρολογίας ἀληθευούσης, ἀλλὰ τοῦ Θεοῦ διὰ τῶν ἐναντίων τὰ τῆς ἀληθείας παραδεικνύντος, ὥστε πᾶσαν τοῖς ἀσεβέσι πρόφασιν περιαιρεθῆναι. 
Haec scilicet dixit astrologus, ut olim Balaam (Num. XXIII), non quod astrologia veritate nitatur, sed quod Deus ut omnis impiis excusatio amputaretur, veritatem per ipsos adversarios ostenderet. 
Thus spake the astrologer, like Balaam of old, not that his star-lore told him true, but because God signifieth the truth by the mouth of his enemies, that all excuse may be taken from the ungodly. 
þetta mællte hann eigi af sinum vilia nema helldr af guðs forsio. er þenna svein hafðe aðr til mykyls fagnaðar ætlat. þvilikazt sem einn spamaðr forðom er het Balam. er blæzaðe þat folk er hann villdi drepa. 
Dette sagde han ikke af egen Vilje, men derimod efter Guds Styrelse, som forud havde bestemt denne Dreng til stor Lykke, ligesom en Prophet fordum ved Navn Balam (Bileam), der velsignede det Folk som han vilde dræbe.
