I (am) Darius the great King, the King of kings, the King in Persia, the King of countries, the son of Hystaspes, the grandson of Arsames, an Achaemenian.

I (am) Darius, the great king, king of kings, king in Persia, king of nations, Hystaspes’ son, Arsames’ grandson, an Achaemenid.

Darius the King says: My father (was) Hystaspes; the father of Hystaspes (was) Arsames: the father of Arsames (was) Ariaramnes; the father of Ariaramnes (was) Teispes; the father of Teispes (was) Achaemenes. 
2. a-ak dišda-ri-ia-ma-u-iš dišLUGAL na-an-ri dišu2 dišat-ta2-ta2 dišmi-iš-da-aš2-ba a-ak dišmi-iš-da-aš2-ba dišat-te-ri dišir-ša2-u2-ma a-[ak] dišir-ša2-u2-ma dišat-te-ri dišhar-ri-ia-ra-um-na a-ak dišhar-ri-ia-ra-um-na dišat-te-ri dišzi2-iš-pi-iš a-ak dišzi2-[iš-pi]-iš [diš]at-te-ri dišha ak-ka4-man-nu-iš 
And Darius the king says: My father (was) Hystaspes, and Hystaspes’ father (was) Arsames, and Arsames’ father (was) Ariaramnes, and Ariaramnes’ father (was) Teispes, and Teispes’ father (was) Achaemenes.

1.6-8: θātiy Dārayavauš xšāyaθiya avahạyarādiy vayam Haxāmanišiyā θahạyāmahạy hacā paruviyata āmātā amahạy hacā paruviyata hayā amāxam taumā xšāyaθiyā āha 
Darius the King says: On that account we are spoken of as Achaemenians. From long past we are noble; from long past our family were kings. 
3. a-ak dišda-ri-ia-ma-u-iš dišLUGAL na-an-ri hu-uh-pe3 in-tuk-ki-me dišnu-ku dišNUMUN-MEŠ dišha-ak-[ka4-man-nu]-ši-ia ti-ri-ma-nu-un ša2-aš2-ša2-ta2 ka4-[ra]-ta2-la-ri ša2-lu-u2-ut a-ak ša2-aš2-ša2-ta2 ka4-ra-ta2-la-ri dišNUMUN-MEŠ dišnu-ka4-mi [dišLUGAL-ip] 
And Darius the king says: For that reason we call (our) family Achaemenids. From long ago (we) have been noble and from long ago our family has been kings. 
dišda-ra-ia-muš LUGAL ki-a-am i-qab-bi a-na lib3-bi a-ga-a (3) NUMUN ša2 a-ha-ma-ni-iš-ši MEŠ a-ni-ni ni-qab-bi ul-tu SUHUŠ DUMU-DU3-MEŠ a-ni-ni ul-tu SUHUŠ-NUMUN-u2-ni LUGAL-MEŠ-šu2-nu

1.8-11: θātiy Dārayavauš xšāyaθiya VIII manā taumāyā tayaiy paruvam xšāyaθiyā āha adam navama IX duvitāparanam vayam xšāyaθiyā amahạy 
Darius the King says: 8 (there were) of my family, who were formerly kings; I (am) the ninth; 9 in succession we have been kings. 
4. a-ak dišda-ri-ia-ma-[u]-iš dišLUGAL na-an-ri 8(diš) dišLUGAL-ip dišNUMUN-MEŠ dišu2-ni-na ap-pu-ka4 dišLUGAL-me mar-ri-iš dišu2 9(diš)-u2-[me-ma dišLUGAL-me] hu-ut-ta2 ša2-ma-ak-mar dišnu-ku dišLUGAL-ip-u2-ut 
And Darius the king says: 8 kings in my family held kingship before me. I held the 9th kingship. One after the other, we were kings. 
dišda-ri-ia-muš LUGAL ki-a-am i-qab-bi 8(diš) ina ŠA3 NUMUN-ia at-tu-u-a ina pa-na-tu-u-a LUGAL-tu i-te-ep-šu2 (4) 9(diš)-KAM ana-ku 9 LUGAL-MEŠ ša2 NUMUN da-ru-u2 a-ni-ni

1.11-12: θātiy Dārayavauš xšāyaθiya vašnā Auramazdāha adam xšāyaθiya amiy Auramazdā xšaçam manā frābara 
Darius the King says: By the favour of Ahuramazda I am King; Ahuramazda bestowed the kingdom on me. 
5. a-ak dišdar-ri-ia-ma-u-iš dišLUGAL na-an-ri za-u-m-in [du]-ra-[maš-da-na] diš#LUGAL#-me dišu2 hu-ut-ta2 du-ra-maš-da dišLUGAL-me dišu2 du-nu-iš 
And Darius the king says: (By) the intercession of Ahuramazda, I exercised kingship. Ahuramazda gave me the kingship. 
dišda-ri-ia-muš LUGAL ki-a-am i-qab-bi ina GISSU ša2 du2-ri-mi-iz-da-a' ana-ku LUGAL du2-ri-mi-iz-da-a' LUGAL-tu ana-ku it-tan-nu

1.12-17: θātiy Dārayavauš xšāyaθiya imā dahạyāva tayā manā *patiyāiša vašnā Auramazdāha adamšām xšāyaθiya āham Pārsa Ūvja Bābiruš Aθurā Arabāya Mudrāya tayaiy drayahạyā Sparda Yauna Māda Armina Katpatuka Parθava Zraka Haraiva Uvārazmīy Bāxtriš Suguda Gadāra Saka Θataguš Harauvatiš Maka fraharavam dahạyāva XXIII 
Darius the King says: These (are) the countries, which came into my possession; by the favour of Ahuramazda I was their King - Persia, Elam (Khuzistan), Babylon, Assyria, Arabia, Egypt, those beside the sea, Sardis (Lydia), Ionia, Media, Armenia, Cappadocia, Parthia, Drangiana (Sistan), Aria (Herat), Chorasmia, Bactria, Sogdiana, Gandara, Saka (Scythia), Sattagydia, Arachosia, Maka (Makran), in all 23 countries. 
6. a-ak dišda-ri-ia-ma-u-iš dišLUGAL na-an-ri dišda-[a]-ia-[u-iš hi ap-pa] dišu2-ni-na ti-ri-iš-ti za-u-mi-in du-ra-maš-da-na dišu2 dišLUGAL-me ap-pi-ni hu-ut-ta2 dišpar2-šipx(Eš) a-ak dišha-tam-tup [a-ak dišba-bi3-li]-ip# a-ak diš2 šu-ra-ip a-[ak ar]-ba-ia-ip a-ak dišmu-iz-za-ri-ia-ip a-ak dišAN-KAM-MEŠ-ip a-ak [dišiš-par2-da-pe3 a]-ak diši-ia-u-na-ip a-ak dišma-da-pe3 a-ak dišhar-mi-nu-ia-ip a-ak diška4-at-ba-du-kaš-pe3 a-ak dišpar2-tu-ma-ip# [a-ak dišsir-ra]-in-kaš-pe3 a-ak dišha-ri-i-ia-ip# [a]-ak dišma-raš2-mi-ia-ip a-ak dišba-ak-ši-iš a-ak dišsu-ug-daš-pe3 a-ak [dišpar2-ru-ba-ra-e]-sa-na a-ak dišša2-ak-ka4-pe3 a-ak [diš]sa-ad-da-ku-iš a-ak dišhar-ra-u-ma-ti-iš a-ak dišma-ak-ka4 PAP ir tar-tin [2(u) 3(diš) dišda-a-ia-u]-iš 
And Darius the king says: These (are) the nations who called (themselves) mine (and by) the intercession of Ahuramazda, I established (my) kingship over them: The Persians and the Elamites and the Babylonians and the Assyrians and the Arabians and the Egyptians and the Sea-People and the Sardians and the Ionians and the Medes and the Armenians and the Cappadocians and the Parthians and the Drangians and the Areians and the Chorasmians and Bactria and the Sogdians and Parauparisana(?) and the Scythians and Sattagydia and Arachosia and Maka, a grand(?) total (of) 23 nations.

1.17-20: θātiy Dārayavauš xšāyaθiya imā dahạyāva tayā manā *patiyāiša vašnā Auramazdāha manā badakā āhatā manā bājim abaratā *tayašām hacāma aθahạya xšapavā raucapativā ava akunavayatā 
Darius the King says: These (are) the countries, which came into my possession; by the favour of Ahuramazda they were my subjects; they bore me tribute; as was said to them by me, either by night or by day, so was (it) done. 
7. a-ak dda-ri-ia-[ma-u]-iš [diš]LUGAL# na-an-ri dišda-a-ia-u-iš hi ap-pa dišu2-ni-na ti-ri-iš-ti za-u-mi-in [du-ra-maš-da-na] TAŠ# li-pa2-me dišu2-ni-na hu-ut-ta2-uh# [ba-zi]-iš dišu2-ni-na ku-ti-iš ap-pa dišu2 ... ap ti-ri-ia dši-ut-ma-na dna-an-ma-na hu-uh#-pe3 hu-ut-ta2-iš 
And Darius the king says: These nations who call (themselves) mine, (by) the intercession of Ahuramazda, performed service unto me, brought me tribute, (and) whatever I commanded, night and day, they accomplished.

1.20-24: θātiy Dārayavauš xšāyaθiya atar imā dahạyāva martiya haya agriya āha avam ubạrtam abaram haya arīka āha avam ufrastam apạrsam vašnā Auramazdāha imā dahạyāva tayanā manā dātā apariyāya yaθāšām hacāma aθahạya avaθā akunavayatā 
Darius the King says: Within these countries the man who (was) faithful, him I rewarded well; he who (was) faithless, him I punished well. By the favour of Ahuramazda these countries showed respect for my law; as was said to them by me, so was it done.

And Darius the king says: Throughout these nations, the man who(?) was(?) …, him (I) upheld; whoever injured, him greatly (I) investigated. (By) the intercession of Ahuramazda, my law was upheld throughout these nations; whatever I commanded, that they accomplished.

Darius the King says: Ahuramazda bestowed this kingdom on me. Ahuramazda bore me aid until I took possession of this kingdom. By the favour of Ahuramazda I hold this kingdom. 
9. [a]-ak dišda-ri-ia-ma-u-iš dišLUGAL [na]-an-ri du-ra-maš-da hi LUGAL-me dišu2 du-nu-iš a-ak du-ra-maš-da pi-ik-[ti dišu2 ta2-iš ku-iš diš]u2 dišLUGAL-me hi-pe3-la a-ak za-u-mi-in [du]-ra-maš-da-na dišu2 dišLUGAL-me mar-ri-ia 
And Darius the king says: Ahuramazda gave me this kingship and Ahuramazda sent me aid, until I strengthened this kingship, and (by) the intercession of Ahuramazda, I held kingship.

Darius the King says. This (is) what was done by me after I became King. A son of Cyrus, Cambyses by name, of our family - he was king here. Of that Cambyses there was a brother, Smerdis by name, of the same mother, of the same father as Cambyses. After that Cambyses killed that Smerdis. When Cambyses killed Smerdis, it did not become known to the people that Smerdis had been killed. After that Cambyses went off to Egypt. When Cambyses went off to Egypt, after that the people became disloyal. After that deceit became widespread in the country, both in Persia and in Media, and in the other countries.

And Darius the king says: This is what I did (by) the intercession of Ahuramazda, after (I) received the kingship. Cambyses by name, Cyrus’ son, of our family, formerly(?) held kingship. That Cambyses, his brother was Smerdis by name, and (Cambyses from) mother (and) father was together with him and that Cambyses killed Smerdis. When Cambyses killed Smerdis the people didn’t know that Smerdis was dead. Then Cambyses went to Egypt. Then the people caused destruction; furthermore, the lies grew throughout the nations, both in Persia and in Media, and throughout other nations.
