Probably dependent on Ar ↗qanāẗ in the sense of ‘shaft’ > ‘shaft with dates’ > ‘bunch of dates’. qanāẗ itself is believed to go back either to Akk qanû ‘reed’, or to Sem *qanaw‑ ‘reed’.
