conc▪ TǦR_1: It seems clear that the root goes back, via Aram, to Akk tamkāru ‘merchant, trader, money-lender’, a deriv. of makāru ‘to do business, use (silver etc.) in business transactions’. However, previous research differs on what should be considered the basis of derivation for all other items of the root—tāǧir ‘merchant’ or tiǧāraẗ ‘commerce, trade’. For phonetic reasons, we follow Jeffery1938 in favouring the latter.
