XXIII. Cap. Fra Eiríki oc Alreki. (12)
XX.

20. [Of Alric and Eric]
Alrekr oc Eirikr heto ſynir (13) Agna. er konongar váro eptir hann þeir (14) váro rikir menn oc her menn miclir oc iþro-(15)-tta menn Þat var ſiðvenia þeira at (16) riða heſta, temia bæþi v gang (17) oc v hlꜹp. kuɴo þeir þat allra (18) manna bezt,  lꜹgðo þeir a þat et me–-(19)-ſta capp hʀ betr reið eða betri (20) heſta atte.
Alrekr ok Eiríkr hétu synir Agna, er konungar váru eptir hann.  Þeir váru ríkir menn ok hermenn miklir ok íþróttamenn.  Þat var siðvenja þeira at ríða hesta, temja bæði við gang ok við hlaup. Kunnu þeir þat allra manna bezt.  Lǫgðu þeir á þat it mesta kapp, hvárr betr reið eða betri hesta átti.

Agni's sons were called Alrek and Eric, and they were kings after him.  They were mighty and able men, great warriors and skilled in all sports.  It was their wont to ride horses and tame them to canter and jump; they could do it best of all men.  They competed with each other to see which rode best or had the best horses.
Þat var eitt ſiɴ (21) at þeir brðr riðo. ij. fra ꜹ-(22)-ðrom mǫnnom með hina bezto he-(23)-ſta ſina. oc riðo ủt a vǫllo (24) nockora oc comủ eigi aptr. (25)  oc var þeira leita farit. oc fủɴủz þeir baþir dꜹþir oc lamit hǫfot a baðom. eɴ ecki vapn hꜹfðo þeir (31,1) nema bitlana af heſtonom. oc þat (2) hyɢia menn at þeir hafe drepiz þar m. (3)
Pat var eitt sinn, at þeir brœðr riðu tveir frá ǫðrum mǫnnum með ina beztu hesta sína, ok riðu út á vǫllu nǫkkura ok kómu eigi aptr.

It happened once that the two brothers rode away from the other men on their best steeds and rode over certain level lands, but came not back.  Men went to look for them and found them both dead with wounded heads, (14) but they had no weapons except horses' bridles, so that men thought that with them they had slain each other.
Sva ſegir Þióðólfr. (4)
Svá segir Þjóðólfr:

So segjer Tjodolv:
Saa siger Tjodolv:
Thus says Tjodolv:

13. Fell Alrekr,
þars Eiríki
bróður vǫ́pn
at bana urðu,

Dags fríendr
of drepask kvǫ́ðu.
Fráat maðr áðr

Freys afspring

Fall der Alrek
der som Eirik
for bror-vaapen
sin bane fekk,
og med hestens
hovud-reimar
frendane hans Dag
drap kvarandre.
Aldri fyrr de spurdest,
at Ynglingar
heste-beisl
hadde til verju. (23)
Alrek faldt
der, hvor Eirik
for broderhaand
sin bane fandt,
og med hestenes
hovedremmer
Dags frænder
dræbte hinanden.
Uhørt det var,
at øgenes greier
af Frøis ætlinger
førtes i kamp.
Alrek fell
There where Eric
At his brother's hand
Got his death,
And where with the headgear
Of the horse Dag's kinsmen
Slew each other.
It was unheard of
That horses' gear
By Frey's offspring
Was borne into fight.
