▪ Etymology obscure. – Any relation to the (obsolete) notion of *‘shrinking, shrivelling’ (due to chick-pies’ shrivelled skin)? Cf. ↗ḤMṢ_4 (= DRS #ḤMṢ(Ṣ)-1) and perh. Soq ḥamṣīṣoh ‘testicule’ (= DRS #ḤMṢ(Ṣ)-8) which, like ‘chick-pea’, could be interpreted as *‘with shrivelled surface/skin’ (though according to DRS, speakers tend to link the word to Soq máḥṣaṣ ‘pebbles’, cf. Ar ḥaṣ^an, ḥaṣāẗ, ḥaṣwat, ↗√ḤṢW). – In contrast, DRS asks whether there might be a connection with ‘to roast’ (↗ḥammaṣa), without explaining the details of such a link (chick-peas as *ʻroasted ones’?)
