▪ The word seems to be dependent on Sem *ṭayr‑ ‘bird’ (or *ṬYR ‘to fly’, cf. ↗ṭayr). EtymArab^© assumes a semantic development *‘bird’ > ‘(to take a bird’s flying as a bad) omen’ > ‘augury’.
